El Nino
<view this essay>.... the help of the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's weather satellites, tracking shifting patterns of
sea-surface temperatures can be made easier. Normally, a "pool" of warm water in
the western Pacific waters exists. Under El Nino conditions, this "pool" drifts
southeast towards the coast of South America. This is because, in a normal year,
there is upwelling on the western South American coastline, and cold waters of
the Pacific rise and push westward. However, during an El Nino year, upwelling
is suppressed and as a result, the thermocline is lower than normal. Finally,
thermocline rises in the west, making upwelling easier and water col .....

Cryogenics And The Future
<view this essay>.... the Kelvin (K). The Kelvin scale
for Cryogenics goes from 173 K to a fraction of a Kelvin above absolute zero.
There are also two main sciences used in cryogenics, and they are
Superconductivity and Superfluidity.
Cryogenics first came about in 1877, when a Swiss Physicist named Rasul
Pictet and a French Engineer named Louis P. Cailletet liquefied oxygen for the
first time. Cailletet created liquid oxygen in his lab using a process known as
adiabatic expansion, which is a "thermodynamic process in which the temperature
of a gas is expanded without adding or extracting heat from the gas or the
surrounding system"(Vance 26). At the same time Pictet used the .....

Narcotics
<view this essay>.... small, you breathe slowly, and most users become constipated, nauseous, short of breath, dizzy, and sleepy. Addicts say that immediately after taking heroin, there is a "rush," followed by a few hours of calm, where people go to sleep, or stay in a half awake state. (During this stage, nothing seems to bother the person.
Heroin is the most addictive narcotic. Of all narcotic addicts, 90-95% use heroin. In the United Stated alone, there are between 500,000- 750,000 heroin addicts. Heroin is often mixed
with cheaper substances, so that the dealer can make a larger profit. Since addicts don't know about the purity of a substance, many die because of ove .....

Acid Rain And Its Origins
<view this essay>.... second. Without this exploration we could kill ourselves. Not only will we kill us but we will kill off everything else.
What did I pick to write on Acid rain with all the other important environmental topics? I chose it because we are subjected to precipitation all the time. I was interested to see just how dangerous acid rain is. If it really is dangerous, I was also interested to see what thing's people can do to help stop its effects. If we cannot stop the effects, I would atleast like to know something’s I can do to lessen the effects on our environment.
What is acid rain? Acid rain is the name commonly given to the deposition of a cocktail of .....

Adolescent Depression: The Under Acknowledged Disease
<view this essay>.... and when should an adolescent with changes in mood be considered clinically depressed?
Brown (1996) has said the reason why depression is often over looked in children and adolescents is because "children are not always able to express how they feel." Sometimes the symptoms of mood disorders take on different forms in children than in adults. Adolescence is a time of emotional turmoil, mood swings, gloomy thoughts, and heightened sensitivity. It is a time of rebellion and experimentation. Blackman (1996) observed that the "challenge is to identify depressive symptomatology which may be superimposed on the backdrop of a more transient, but expected, develo .....

Acid Rain 2
<view this essay>.... can be carried long distances by very strong winds, returning to Earth as acid rain, snow, or fog.
Who is affected? Basically every one who comes in contact with acid rain is affected. Among one of the serious side effects of acid pollution on humans is respiratory problems. The SO2 and NO2 emmisions give rise to respitory problems such as asthma, dry coughs, headaches, eye, nose and throat irritations. An indirect effect of acid rain on humans is that the toxic metals dissolved in the water are absorbed in fruits, vegetables and in the tissues of animals. Even though these toxic metals do not directly affect the animals, they have serious effects on humans .....

Genetic Cloning ----
<view this essay>.... Pigs have organs that are about the right size and are similiar to humans, also the availability of these organs is great due to the reproductive cycle of pigs. The biggest obstacle is the issue of rejection. The new organ is typically killed, even before the surgeon closes the incision, due to hyperacute rejection. This process clots the blood, by forming antibodies that attach to the endothelium of the blood vessels in the organ. The complement system creates gaps in vessels, allowing gaps to form and clots to accumulate. Therefore, a complement inhibitor was developed as the gene was cloned, introduced into pigs whose cells produced this protein. .....

The Big Bang
<view this essay>.... the universe rapidly expanded.1 The Big Bang was the start of time and
space. The matter and radiation of that early stage rapidly expanded and cooled.
Several million years later, it condensed into galaxies. The universe has
continued to expand, and the galaxies have continued moving away from each other
ever since. Today the universe is still expanding, as astronomers have observed.
The Steady State model says that the universe does not evolve or change in
time. There was no beginning in the past, nor will there be change in the
future. This model assumes the perfect cosmological principle. This principle
says that the universe is the same e .....
