Preservation Of The Environment
<view this essay>.... remains a serious health risk in most American cities, and in some areas it's getting worse. Many of the industrial sources that create the bulk of ozone-forming pollution are in violation of the law. Or consider water. In early September over 1,000 people drank contaminated water at a county fair in upstate New York. Two died and 65 others were hospitalized. If you think this couldn't happen to you, think again. A recent federal audit found that nearly 90 percent of all violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act go unreported. Some of those violations are harmless data-entry errors, but they also include potentially lethal problems such as contamination with p .....

The Application Of Fractal Geometry To Ecology
<view this essay>.... and the ability to more accurately model landscapes and ecosystems.
Using fractal dimensions allows ecologists to map animal pathways without
creating an unmanageable deluge of information. Computer simulations of
landscapes provide useful models for gaining new insights into the coexistence
of species. Although many ecologists have found fractal geometry to be an
extremely useful tool, not all concur. With all the new insights gained through
the appropriate application of fractal geometry to natural sciences, it is clear
that fractal geometry a useful and valid tool.
New insight into the natural world is just one of the results of the increas .....

The Origin Of Life On Earth
<view this essay>.... evidence that life could be firmly of rooted in our ancient seas. The project recreated the, what was believed to be, simple atmosphere and hydrosphere on our primitive Earth in a sealed glass ecosystem. This ecosystem had a bulb, which contained an amount of water with hydrogen, nitrogen, and simple carbon compounds dissolved in them. These various elements were believed to either formed with the Earth or were picked up by the many meteoric collisions that immediately following the formation of our planet. The bulb had a heating unit under it to stimulate evaporation, then there was a smaller bulb that contained electrodes, simulating lightning and other .....

Wilderness Required
<view this essay>.... rainforests. Today’s technology can produce any concoction imaginable; though most are developed by duplicating and improving what nature has to offer. As long as there are natural discoveries yet to be made, then there are cures only yet to be discovered.
A trek to the peak of a snow-capped mountain or an Arctic voyage through glaciers and icy waters are the journeys that most would consider essential to life. Colin Fletcher was one to claim that wilderness is needed:
“And when at last I walked on past the two juniper trees
toward the far side of the plateau I found I was feeling sorry
for any man who was not free to abandon whatever futility
detained .....

Gold And Its Uses.
<view this essay>.... that are conductive allow this current to flow unimpeded. "Gold is able to convey even a tiny electrical current in temperatures varying from -55° to +200° centigrade." (Gold Institute) Gold is the most ductile of all metals, allowing it to be drawn out into tiny wires or threads without breaking. Consequently, a single ounce of gold can be drawn into a wire five miles long. Gold's malleability is also unparalleled. It can be shaped or extended into extraordinarily thin sheets. For example, one ounce of gold can be hammered into a 100 square foot sheet.
Gold is the most reflective and least absorptive material of infrared (or heat) energy. High purity gold .....

Black Holes
<view this essay>.... the air. Assuming you don't throw it too hard, it will rise for a while, but eventually the acceleration due to the planet's gravity will make it start to fall down again. If you threw the rock hard enough, though, you could make it escape the planet's gravity entirely. It would keep on rising forever. The speed with which you need to throw the rock in order that it just barely escapes the planet's gravity is called the "escape velocity." As you would expect, the escape velocity depends on the mass of the planet: if the planet is extremely massive, then its gravity is very strong, and the escape velocity is high. A lighter planet would have a smaller escape vel .....

EPA Urges Tough Rules On Arsenic
<view this essay>.... into office. The 50-year federal standard for naturally occurring arsenic levels in drinking water was at 50 parts per billion and the proposition was made at 10 parts per billion.
Person 3- Whitman charged at the time that the Clinton rule had been hastily crafted without adequate scientific study or consideration of the cost for small communities that would have to change their filtration systems to meet federal law. The review focused on alternative standards – ranging from as low as 3 parts per billion to as high as 20 parts per billion. Whitman states it is to dangerous to have the arsenic levels over 20 parts per billion.

Future Of Radio And The Internet
<view this essay>.... quality gets worse every time; in the same way, each time analogue sound is modified or retransmitted, it loses quality. Digital audio uses a binary code representation of the continuous stream of data. Once in this form, it can be modified in any way without any degradation of the original sound. One can make copies of copies with digital audio, and the hundredth will be exactly like the first.
The great advantage of digital audio with respect to radio is the possibility of listener interactivity. Currently, any interactivity is limited by the inability of the individual talk to the other end of a radio transmission chain. When one switches stations on our .....
