Straight-Edge: What It Is And What It Isn't
<view this essay>.... and what it really is. This is because straight-
edge means something different to each person who follows it; however,
there are some basic "rules" that every straight-edge person follows,
whether they are straight-edge or hard-line straight-edge.
Straight-edge is not something that has occurred just recently. It
is commonly believed that it was started nearly two decades ago in the
1980-1983 era by the hardcore-punk band called Minor Threat. The song
"Straight-Edge" written by Ian MacKaye, the band's singer, not only coined
the phrase, but it encompassed all of the philosophies that a straight-edge
person believes in. There have been theories .....

Divorce And Preschool Children
<view this essay>.... on and allow me to show you what I mean.
The age of the child during the time that marital separation occurs is important, and in fact children of different ages are effected differently by divorce. According to Dr. Hodges and Dr. Bloom (1984), who are Psychology professors, “ the effect of age of the child on the response to the divorce of parents can be examined in three general age groups: preschool, latency (or elementary age) and adolescence”. Each of these age groups showed to respond differently. The preschool age children respond to marital separation with regression, anger, tantrums, aggression and anxiety. The Latency age group shows less impact al .....

Fetishism
<view this essay>.... such as that the fetishist usually needs to look at,
touch, or smell during or preparing for the sexual act. In some cases just the
sight of the fetish could result in an orgasm.
The Freudian view of fetishes changed over the years. His early view
stated that fetishism was a result of some childhood fantasy or exposure that
resulted in the fetish but he later changed the view. Freud later theorized
that the fetish was a fear of castration on the part of the male. He believed
that the association with the penis to the female reproductive organ was a
reminder to men that castration is possible. This anxiety would cause the
fetishist to associate his or h .....

Men And Women: Why Are We So Different?
<view this essay>.... them up with one sex or the other." This shows that society views certain characteristics as being distinctly male and others as being distinctly female. We, as men, should be careful not to undervalue women as Dr. Valian says we do. We should hold them as equals and as partners. In doing this, it is necessary to examine some of these differences and to show that though these do exist, neither is superior to the other, and society should strive to reflect this.
The first difference that we will examine is the very core that makes us different. That core is biology. In biology, there are two distinct sets of genes: male (XX) and female (XY). Though th .....

Women In Combat
<view this essay>.... bombs.
Their performance has led the world to realize that women are extremely useful
in combat. Defense secretary Dick Chaney said "Women have made a major
contribution to this war effort. We could not have won without them." Leaders
in the field agreed. The Gulf War had the largest deployment of women in the
armed forces in history. These women encountered the same risks as the men they
served with.
In the Persian Gulf, there were no exact positions and all areas were
equally vulnerable, so the idea of safe havens for women was not really
applicable. By many armed forces policies, females are banned from combat jobs
and units, but in the Persian .....

Affirmative Action Today
<view this essay>.... in employment and in college enrollment. In recent years, affirmative action has become an aggressive effort that requires and measures minority representation. As a result, affirmative action has produced undesirable problems in the American culture.
The term "affirmative action" was first used in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. He signed Executive Order 10925 that stated "the contractor will take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and employees are treated during their employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin" (qtd. in Hall 898). In 1954, the Brown decision [Brown v. Board of Education] r .....

Issues On Gun Control
<view this essay>.... legislation that would take the handguns out of the criminals' hands and watch the government put these brutal killers into jail and let them stay there. If we could eliminate the nonsense that happens constantly on Capital Hill, this dream would be a very real one. With the interests of political activist groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Congress has had a tough time passing any legislation that would benefit the public and curtail the sail and manufacture of armor piercing bullets, automatic rifles and Uzis. Unfortunately, we tend to interpret the Constitution to broadly. Obviously, in the .....

Conformity And Obedience
<view this essay>.... adhering to social norms, and we do this to remain part of a team or society and also to keep respect from people and to have a sense of belonging. To be able to conform you must sometimes sacrifice opinions that you have and also you have to have a good level of self discipline so that you conform to social norms.
Obedience is the ability to take and follow orders from authority. Milgram did a study ending in 1976 which involved 1 person operating switches where it administered a shock to a imaginary learner that the subject could not see but could hear and the learner was pairing cards but each time he got one wrong he was administered an electric shock .....
