Taking The Pill Depression And
<view this essay>.... But the people that feel this way, often have not had any personal experience with this illness.
The physical basis of depression involves neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that carry messages from one nerve cell to another. Nerve cells do not touch. There are microscopic gaps between them called synapses. For a nerve impulse to travel from one nerve cell to another, the sending cell releases a tiny amount of one of the neurotransmitters, which transmits the signal to the second cell, and so on around the body. After a nerve impulse has been sent across a synapse, special enzymes clear away the neurotransmitter so that an .....

Aerosol Spray Cans
<view this essay>.... paints,
insecticides, and shaving cream to name a few. The can is filled with the
product to be sprayed and the propellant, a compressed gas such as butane or
Freon. The gas is partly liquefied by the pressure in the can, but there is a
layer of free gas above the liquid. As the can empties liquefied gas vaporizes
to fill the space.
The valve is normal held shut by the pressure in the can, and by the
coil spring directly below the valve stem. When the push button is pressed, it
forces the valve stem down in its housing, uncovering a small a small hole which
leads up through the stem to the nozzle in the button. This allows the product
to be forced up the dip .....

The Element: Chlorine
<view this essay>.... forming a pale yellowish green solution.
Chlorine is so reactive that it never occurs free in nature.
Chemical Properties
Chlorine is in the halogen family, and like all the other
halogen elements chlorine has a strong tendency to gain one electron
and become a chloride ion. Chlorine readily reacts with metals to form
chlorides, most of which are soluble in water. Chlorine also reacts
directly with many nonmetals such as sulfur, phosphorus, and other
halogens. Chlorine can support combustion; if a candle were to be thrown
into a vessel of chlorine, it would continue to burn, releasing dense,
black clouds of smoke, The chlorine combines with hydrogen .....

Fossil Fuels: Our Society's Dependency
<view this essay>.... World War II rubber supplies were cut off to the western world
and we began to work on a compound that was a synthetic rubber. We succeeded in
supplying the demand and now that same synthetic compound is used today. My
theory is that the same thing will happen with such things as plastic, which is
made from fossil fuels. Someone will either come up with a synthetic plastic or
come up with something to substitute for plastic. The person who comes up with
the solution will become and instant millionaire and everyone will be happy.
There is one draw back of this way of solving problems, I mean sure it's great
to wait until the demand but we sho .....

Toxic Waste
<view this essay>.... solid and liquid radioactive waste.
has been known to cause ecological imbalances. DDT was used as an insecticide up until 1972. It almost wiped out the Bald Eagle population. It caused the birds to lay eggs so thin shelled eggs the eggs were unhatchable. Laws banned the use of DDT and also required the reduction of lead in gas. DDT is still used in developing countries on the malaria-carrying mosquito. Oil spills also have harmful effects, luckily chemicals can neutralize the oil before massive damage occurs. In 1983 the Dow Chemical Company’s factory, a major producer of chemicals, showed contamination from dioxin. Dow undertook a 3 million dollar st .....

Chromosome Probes At The University Of Toronto
<view this essay>.... markers for six plus the gender determining X and Y chromosomes. "What we're trying to decide now is whether to isolate probes for the other chromosomes, or whether we should utilize the eight we have," he says. Dr. Willard is currently negotiating with an American company to develop prenatal diagnostic tests, which, because the current tests are time consuming and technically difficult to do, are restricted to women over 35 and those who have a family history of chromosomal abnormalities. Prenatal tests using Willard's probes would be much simpler and faster to perform and could be available to all pregnant women who wish to take advantage of the technology .....

Natural Disasters
<view this essay>.... enabled me to learn more about
hurricanes. That is why I have decided to take the focus of my paper towards
hurricanes. Furthermore, I am going to look at the economical affects that
hurricanes have on the United States. There are many reasons why I chose to use
this variable. The main reason is I couldn't think of another topic that fit
into e veryone's lives and had an effect on everyone.
The hurricane year is broken up into two seasons. They are referred to
as early season and late season. The early season starts June first and runs to
September 10. The late season starts on September 10 and runs to the end of
November. The date of September 10 is the midwa .....

B E C: The New Phase Of Matter
<view this essay>.... and
Technology and the University of Colorado were the first to uncover the BEC.
They magnetically trapped rubidium atoms and then supercooled the atoms to
almost absolute zero. The graphic on the cover shows the Bose-Einstien
condensation, where the atom's velocities peak at close to zero velocity, and
the atoms slowly emerge from the condensate. The atoms were slowed to the low
velocity by using laser beams. The hardware needed to create the BEC is a
bargain at $50,000 to $1000,000 which makes it accessible to physics labs around
the world.
The next step is to test the new phase of matter. We do not know yet if
it absorbs, reflects,or refracts l .....
