Bipolar Disorder
<view this essay>.... vigilant in the
quest for explanations of its causes and treatment.
Affective disorders are characterized by a smorgasbord of symptoms that can be
broken into manic and depressive episodes. The depressive episodes are characterized by
intense feelings of sadness and despair that can become feelings of hopelessness and
helplessness. Some of the symptoms of a depressive episode include anhedonia,
disturbances in sleep and appetite, psycomoter retardation, loss of energy, feelings of
worthlessness, guilt, difficulty thinking, indecision, and recurrent thoughts of death and
suicide. The manic episodes are characterized by elevated or irritable mood, .....

Frogs
<view this essay>.... rear, and most frogs are very vocal,
especially the male frogs.
As a frog grow, it goes through many changes. Starting out as a tadpole,
and morphing into a frog. Most frogs lay their eggs in water. Others will lay
their eggs some where safe, then carry them to water where they hatch into
tadpoles. At this stage they have gills, no legs, and a tail. As they mature,
their gills and tail disappear, and they develop lungs and legs. This period of
tadpole life can be divided into three stages. The first stage, called “
premetamorphosis,” lasts about 50 days (Patent 54). The second stage, in which
the hind legs grow, is called “prometamorphosis,” and lasts .....

The Greenhouse Effect
<view this essay>.... Experts predict that a
possible result of the greenhouse effect will be that the world's oceans
will rise a possible 1 to 4 feet. Temperatures are expected to rise
causing more rain in some places and less in others.
Another provider to the greenhouse effect is the use of CFCs. CFCs, or
chlorofluorocarbon, are used in making plastics and in aerosol spray cans,
refrigerants, air conditioners, and similar objects. Like carbon dioxide,
the CFCs are trapping more heat in the earth's atmosphere. CFCs have also
been blamed for ozone depletion. CFCs are suspected of breaking down ozone
particles that shield us from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Too many .....

The Periodic Table
<view this essay>.... from hydrogen to calcium, in keeping with gradual increase in atomic weights. Rather, the properties change gradually through a certain number of elements, called a "period" of elements. Then they repeat, through the next period. To express this, Mendeleev stated the periodic law: The properties of the elements are periodic functions of the atomic weights.
provides an easy way to show the division of the elements into acid-forming and base-forming types. Those on the left are base-forming; those on the right are acid-forming. Those in between can be either. They have so-called amphoteric oxides and hydroxides that can act like acids or bases. 's arrangeme .....

The Problems With Acid Rain
<view this essay>.... When products are manufactured many chemicals are used to create it. However because of the difficulty and cost of properly disposing of these products they are often emitted into the atmosphere with little or no treatment.
The term was first considered to be important about 20 years ago when scientists in Sweden and Norway first believed that acidic rain may be causing great ecological damage to the planet. The problem was that by the time that the scientist found the problem it was already very large. Detecting an acid lake is often quite difficult. A lake does not become acid over night. It happens over a period of many years, some times decades. The chan .....

Nuclear Weapons
<view this essay>.... and "Little Boy" on Japan,
which ended WWII, the public has had some type of understanding about the
power of plutonium and the devastating properties it possesses.
After WWII, Americans started to think about what the atomic bomb
could do to the United States and it's people. When ever plutonium was
mentioned the first thing that came to people's minds were the bombings of
Hiroshima or Nagasaki. No one ever considered the fact that plutonium
could be used for more constructive purposes such as: sources of energy or
to keep a person's heart beating. We did begin to produce more plutonium
but the majority of the substance was used towards our nuclear we .....

Plutonium
<view this essay>.... the Nobel prize in 1951
for their discoveries of Plutonium, Americium (Am), Curium (Cm), Berkelium (Bk),
and Californium (Cf). In addition, Seaborg later contributed to the discovery
of three more radioactive elements, Einsteinium (Es), Mendelevium (Md), and
Nobelium (No). Plutonium was Seaborg’s first discovery. Its name came from
Pluto, the planet after Neptune for which Neptunium was named. In 1940, at the
University of California at Berkeley, he bombarded a sample of Uranium with
deuterons, the nuclei in atoms of deuterium, transmuting it into plutonium.
Shortly after, Seaborg was able to isolate plutonium 239, an isotope used in
atomic bombs.

Anthopleura Elegantissima
<view this essay>.... that are similar to these sea anemones.
Francis first explains the materials and methods. One of the first steps in this section is collecting the anemones. Slowly sliding a spatula under the sea anemones, Francis dislodged them from the immense rocks to which they were attached. At the laboratory they were kept in glass bowls containing water from the sea and were fed periodically, exclusive of experimentation time. In case of any impairments from the collection process, the anemones were kept in these bowls for a few weeks before any of the experiments started. Only the most healthy anemones were used in the experiment. To free the anemones, Franci .....
