Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony Number Five
<view this essay>.... RVW thought he may never
finish the opera, and didn't want to waste any good ideas. The symphony does not
have a programme, it is absolute music. It is in four movements: a "Preludio"
first movement, a Scherzo, a "Romanza" slow movement, and a "Passacaglia" finale.
First Movement : Preludio
From the very beginning, RVW puts the key signature of this movement into doubt.
The movement opens with a horn call in D, set against a firm base (or bass?) of
octave C's. Could it be that in the great traditions of British musical
'amateurism', RVW got his transposition wrong? Or is this a deliberate feature
of the music, intended to blur the tonality? Musicologists .....

Coro Concert Experience
<view this essay>.... each playing a different instrument. The two parts were balanced and helped emphasize one another.
The Coronation Mass, K. 317, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was considered to have been written for the anniversary of the coronation of an image of the Virgin. Mozart wrote this composition in 1797 at the age of twenty-three. The six works of the Coronation Mass are: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei.
My favorite piece was Gloria. It was louder and more powerful then the rest. The parts were sung by women then men in a beautiful combination. The music was soft and intimate then quickly getting louder and more powerful. “Gl .....

Instrumental History Of The Drums
<view this essay>.... is struck with a drum stick, while being
struck the strings vibrate, giving this instrument its characteristic crisp
staccato.
This small medieval instrumnet gradually increased size, about the 15th century.
It was so often combined in a performance with a fife that these two instrumnets
became closely associated with one another. A fife is a small flute having from
six to eight finger holes and it also has no key, used mainly with drums in
playing marches.
The tenor drum is closely related to the snare drum. It is somewhat larger in
size and it has no snares across its lower skin. This drum is played with sofft
felt covered sticks and it produces a h .....

Jimi Hendrix
<view this essay>.... Division. After sustaining a back injury during a jump,
he received a medical discharge. After his army career came to an abrupt
end, he decided to go into the music field. By this time he had become an
accomplished guitarist, and was soon to become known as the greatest
guitarist ever (Stambler, pg. 290). However, he did not start out at the
top. Jimi started out playing as part of the back-up for small time R & B
groups. It did not take long before his work was in demand with some of the
best known artists in the field, such as B.B. King, Ike and Tina Turner,
Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson, Littler Richard, Wilson Pickett, and King

Upon graduation from Bell High School he worked during the day as a rehearsal pianist in dance halls and theaters. At night he paid his dues in a succession of after-hours bars, clip joints and five dollar-a-night sp .....

A Rock Concert
<view this essay>.... number of people was enormous. I had to actually become one with
the people next to me. The crowd provided or allowed no personal space. We
were all packed in there liked caged wildcats. I had to move as the crowd
allowed or insisted. Everything was done as a group. There were no individuals
here. It was only one group of crazed fans fighting for that one glimpse of
their favorite band. The crowd would shift as people passed out. This only
allowed me to move closer to the front. As you can tell, I was packed in until
the end.
Your sight was not left out either. Plenty of pyrotechnics kept your eyes
filled with colorful wonder as the music pl .....

The Classical Period
<view this essay>.... were all direct
effects of the changing musical times.
Among the many musical types of the period, the classical period is best
known for the symphony, a form of a large orchestral ensemble. The symphonic
pieces generally had three movements, the sonata, the minuet, and the finale.
Building of the achievements of earlier composers, Haydn, and Mozart brought the
symphony to it's peak in the last 20 years of the 18th century. Haydn excelled
in rhythmic drive and development of theme-based music. Mozart also added to
the symphony by contrasting memorable lyric themes in very full sounding
orchestral settings.
To satisfy the middle-class amateur, classic com .....

History Of Rock And Roll
<view this essay>.... combine the power of heavy metal with the raw garage band sound.
Many punk songs were reactions to the glitter and glam rock bands of the seventies. The fact that groups were spending months, weeks, or hours in a studio, writing 15- minute songs, and playing elaborate shows with spectacular stage performances in front of thousands of people in large arenas really angered punk bands. Punk songs were generally simple and rather short. The lyrics told the way the members of the band felt. They played small shows and did not put on any elaborate performances.
The Sex Pistols were the epitome of a punk band. They were discovered in an antifashion clothing store in .....
