Modern Vs. Ancient
<view this essay>.... from Greek drama, specifically
from the play Oedipus.
The play The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in The Moon Marigolds and both
Antigone and Oedipus have used the same ideas and they both have very similar
aspects to them. Although they created the modern play many years after the
other two, there are still signs of the old style of writing in them, just like
there are in most plays. For example, these three plays use the same motifs in
their main themes, in fact they all use pretty much the same themes, and have
the same morals. Just like plays passed on from generation to generation, modern
plays also have morals in them, and many of those morals are si .....

Hamlet: Revenge Or Scruples?
<view this essay>.... divine
ordinance will ultimately face judgment. We might look at the ghost of the late
king Hamlet as the part of us that wants to take vengeance into our own minds.
Like the little voice in our heads that tells us to do something, when in our
hearts we know it is wrong.
When Horatio, Barnardo, and Marcellus tell Hamlet of their sighting of
the ghost, Hamlet agrees to join them that night and see if he can observe the
ghost firsthand and possibly speak with it. That night when Horatio, Marcellus,
and Hamlet sight the ghost, it beckons Hamlet to leave the other two and speak
to it in privacy. Hamlet follows, despite the protests of the others, who fe .....

Review Of "Saving Private Ryan"
<view this essay>.... with an identical image--an
American flag, waving in the wind. Given that we too often take images at
face value, it's easy to figure this for half-ass patriotism. We must look
more closely. This isn't standard-issue symbology. The flag is blasted
out, bleeding of all colors. It signals that something fundamental has
been lost forever. Saving Private Ryan is a patriotic film. How could it
not be, possessed of such reverence for the suffering endured by so many
soldiers in the defense of a nation? As difficult as it may be to
distinguish between national pride and blind nationalism, Spielberg makes
his film by insisting on visualizing an overwhelming .....

Oedipus Rex: The Punishment Of The King
<view this essay>.... he wished to put an end to a deadly
plague, and that plague would only be stopped when said murderer is killed,
or driven from the land (pp 4-5). Thusly, when it is revealed that Oedipus
himself murdered Laius, then banishment seems to be the only option. Death,
in my mind, is not valid simply because of what it might do to the
kingdom's people. Even though it seems that Oedipus has not been a
particularly good monarch, in fact his only major accomplishment seems to
be killing the Sphinx all those years ago, having a king put to death could
have serious repercussions on the rest of the kingdom. So in the end, the
only way to cure the plague and keep th .....

Macbeth: Shakespeare's Comparisons And Contrasts
<view this essay>.... audience, become fully aware of Macbeth's intentions to
murder the king. Duncan hails Macbeth as his "worthiest cousin" and blindly
entrusts his fate to one whom he considers his "peerless kinsman." Shakespeare
concentrates on Macbeth's courage so that he can contrast it later on with the
terror and panic of Macbeth's psychological anguish.
Lady Macbeth will stop at nothing -not even murder- to satisfy her driving
ambition. She worries that Macbeth is "too full of the milk of human kindness"
to go after the throne. She wants to be tough and begs the spirits to "unsex me
here." Macbeth, on the other hand, hesitates to murder Duncan for several
reasons .....

Hamlet: Contrast Between Laertes And Hamlet
<view this essay>.... of
his father's killer, Hamlet presumes the individual spying on his
conversation with Gertrude is Claudius("Nay, I know not: is it the King?"
Act 3, Scene 4 line 28). Consequently, Hamlet consumed with rage
automatically thrusts out attempting to kill Claudius, but instead strikes
Polonius. Hamlet's and Laertes's imprudent actions are incited by fury and
frustration. Sudden anger prompts both Hamlet and Laertes to act
spontaneously, giving little thought to the consequences of their actions.
Hamlet and Laertes share a different but deep love and concern for
Ophelia. Before his departure for France Laertes provides lengthy advice
to Ophelia .....

Grunge Literature

the 'empress' title. Ettler is part of the Australian 'brat pack' of Dirty
Realists, the grunge writers who reproduce the urban underside of life with
every thrust of a fuck, every snort of a drug and every pocket of grime
that coats our cities. They're young, articulate, and write novels that
bluntly reflect the nihilism of the generation X-ers. They follow in the
footsteps of the US grunge writers, inspired first by Bret Easton Ellis
Less Than Zero, American Psycho.
The River Ophelia was Ettler's first published novel but was written after
Marilyn's Almost Terminal New York Adventure which has just been rele .....

The Caretaker By Pinter: A Play Can Be Confrontational, Challenging And
<view this essay>.... influenced by the
fashionable philosophic review of human condition that was prominent in the
1950's and 1960's – existentialism. The play attacks the notion that there
are no absolute truths or realities. Pinter is therefore concerned with
what exists as unknown and intangible to humanity. His theatre interrogates
the truth of nature and realities of language and demonstrates that much of
what the audience regards as fact is fiction as he explores the uncertainty
of human existence.
When an audience of the 1960's went to the theatre, it can generally be
assumed that they had preconceived ideas about what they expected and what
they are going to gain from t .....
