The Death Penalty: To Be Or Not To Be...
<view this essay>.... crime rates in the New York City
going down, all I see and hear in the media are reports about horrible
crimes committed by New Yorkers.
As George Pettinico states in his article " Crime and punishment:
America changes it's mind ": The media's extensive coverage of crime,
especially the most brutal and horrific cases have heightened the public's
fear and anger over this issue to a near frenzy. When asked in January of
this year, " How often do you see reports of violent crime on television ?
" 68 % replied " almost every day ".
Although the media have played an important role in raising the
public's awareness of lawlessness, crime in Americ .....

Due to all these lobbying groups which show substantial evidence that marijuana can be used as a prescribed drug. Also many advocates who are pro marijuana complain that morphine and cocaine are legal and are very dangerous drugs, that brings up the question why not legalize marijuana as medical drug which is proven to be less dangerous than cocaine and morphine. Lobbying groups in a San Diego, California , council committee unanimously voted .....

Pros And Cons Of Capital Punishment
<view this essay>.... that
the death penalty is a deterrent for murder. A high of 97% of the people
favor capital punishment, where 1% think that our justice system should not
be more lenient on death row inmates. Only 89% think that once convicted
of murder, an inmate should be sentenced to death immediately.
I would like to take this time to tell you a story. On August 15, 1997,
the Reverend John Miller preached a sermon at the Martha Vineyards
Tabernacle in New Hampshire. He told his congregation, which included the
vacationing President Clinton and his wife, that capital punishment is
wrong. "I invite you to look at a picture of Timothy McVeigh and to
forgive him," said .....

Capital Punishment
<view this essay>.... Why should we pay that much money for criminals a year, especially when most prison inmates have had prior convictions. Over half of all inmates return to prison shortly after being released. There are about thirty-three hundred people on death row. Fifty to sixty percent of inmates are now executed each year, most after having served ten years on death row (Senna and Sigel 430). While inmates are on death row most will appeal the courts, which taxpayers also pay for. Inmates have their lawyer paid for the first time he or she appeals the court, after that it is up to the inmate to pay for his or her own lawyer. Now, after exhausting state appeals, most pri .....

Hate Crimes And Punishment
<view this essay>.... Person A and Person B both assault innocent people. But while beating the life out of his victim, Person B calls him a “Nigger.” His crime is considered a hate crime. Consequently, his crime will receive harsher punishment. Despite why the crime took place, the point is that a crime took place. No matter why the victim is chosen, “he or she was still harmed, the family is still going to grieve, and someone must be punished” (Staff editorial 1). Whether a person is killed for money or drugs or out of hate or prejudice, the fact still remains that he or she has been killed. With hate crime laws, the hate is being looked at, more so than the crime itself. Even .....

Marijuana: Controversial Smoke
<view this essay>.... alcohol was still sold and used, but people were doing it illegally. The 21st amendment repealed prohibition and alcohol taxes were increased. The same thing should happen with marijuana. I think it should be taxed heavily to increase the revenue of the states. That extra money could be used for further research. First it need to be legalized for this to happen.
Not like its counterparts, marijuana has medical benefits. It is morphine for glaucoma, and cancer patients. If they are allergic to any painkiller, patients could use marijuana to kill their pain. It gives an appetite to AIDS patients. The cloud of suspicion would disappear, and doctors coul .....
