1984: Summary
<view this essay>.... elimination of speech to a form where humans can no
longer think for themselves. These future citizens would not be able to commit
any crimes against the Party. There is no possible way these humans would even
think "criminal" thoughts to begin with since they had no knowledge of any crime
from personal experience or history.
The main character of this book is Winston Smith. Even though he is portrayed as
a criminal, I believe that he is a victim of a system that is criminal. All
through this book Winston's convictions lead us to believe that he is ethical
and the Party is unjust but it is left up to the readers discretion to decide
whether he is the crimi .....

Comparing Events In History To
<view this essay>.... 1950 a republican senator from Wisconsin by the name of Joseph McCarthy started a rumor that the State Department employed 205 communists. After a while the number was dropped to 57. Still this raised a hysteria in America causing many Americans that there were spies working for the country. In the end of this investigation the rumor was proven false and no spies turned up. The word “McCarthyism is the unfairly accusing other of disloyalty and subversion.” (DiBacco et all, R47) All this person did was just scare many Americans just like in the Salem Witch trials. I guess that was McCarthy’s crucible, to make Americans think that a large amount of Communi .....

How Does H.G. Wells Create Tension In: The Red Room
<view this essay>.... castles are extremely old and many have violent and deadly secrets in their pasts. To add to this the narrator is already aware that there had been a fatal accident involving the young Duke who had fallen down the stairs, supposedly running away from a ghost. This adds tension because it makes the reader wonder what is going to happen to the narrator as he does not believe that the castle is haunted. The way that the past suspicious happenings appear in the middle of the story also creates a lot of tension, as reading from the beginning, the reader does not know the circumstances responsible for the fear felt by the three residing custodians.
"for he had op .....

The Lost World: Private Interview With Dr. Ian Malcolm
<view this essay>.... dinosaurs and very dangerous?
To begin I'd like to say I did not know the island was inhabited by
dinosaurs but merely suspected the thought. I agreed to go with Dr. Levine
as a safety precaution. If there were dinosaurs on the island I could help
Richard setup more quickly. I also thought that if they had someone with
experience with dinosaurs it would be to their advantage.
3. After the first excursion to "Jurassic Park," the dinosaurs were
destroyed, why is that?
We all had to make a choice. We agreed that silence was the best
option. The evidence of there ever having been dinosaurs on the island had
to be destroyed so that no one would ever kn .....

The Awakening: Edna And True Love
<view this essay>.... with doing exactly what she has been expected to do; including finding a husband in someone that she was not in love with. He found more ownership in her, rather than equality in which she was longing for. She was never satisfying in the relationship that she had with him. The love that she had for him was merely present on the surface. It could best be described as a life that she was confined to living rather than the life that she had always yearned for.
With the winds of change came a person that she found contrasting to her current life. This man was Alcee Arobin. His role in her life was not true love either. He merely introduced the taste of tangible lo .....

Comparison Of 1984 And Animal Farm
<view this essay>.... a week earlier. Because of the Party's
successful assault on the individuality of its members, people became
cheerful when they heard of the news. This perceived reality is the truth
to the Party members.
The true reality in 1984 is shown only to the reader and some
Inner Party members. O'Brien knows the real truth of things as shown by
his torturing of Winston. He tells Winston that if the Party tells the
people that 2+2=5, then it does. He also instructs Winston that if the
Party informs its members that 2+2=3 or 4 or all at the same time, then it
is so. Although this true reality is available to Inner Party members,
they too do not have .....

Blind Idealism In Twain's "War Prayer" And Howell's "Editha"
<view this essay>.... to further its' global power and influence. The United States annexes Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines and exerts substantial economic influence over Cuba as the spoils of war. Twain and Howells uses this historical event as a source for their respective literary works, "War Prayer" and "Editha". The authors' common purpose in these stories is to critically expose the ideology encompassing America's self-proclaimed right of expansionism, and to awaken the idealists' understanding as to the global consequences of their actions. While both stories attempt to challenge the idealistic glory of war and realistically unmask the unavoidable devastation, suffe .....

The Metamorphosis: The Last Four Pages

independence. Prior to Gregor's death, the family relied completely on Gregor's
financial support and had little in terms of responsibilities. Kafka explains
this lack of work when he writes, "they [Gregor's parents] had formed the
conviction that Gregor was set for life in his firm . . . they were so
preoccupied with their immediate troubles that they had lost all consideration
for the future,"(17). By taking the initiative and writing to their employers,
Gregor's family proves that they no longer depend on Gregor.
The scene at the kitchen table proves revealing once again when Mr.
