Setting In "A Rose For Emily"
<view this essay>.... of Jefferson is a fallen legacy.
The hierarchical regime of the Griersons and the class system of the time
where by ordinance of the mayor- Colonel Sartoris, a Negro women could not
even walk the street without an apron, had changed into a place where even
the street on which Miss Emily lived, that had once been the most select,
had now been encroached and obliterated, her house an eyesore among
eyesores. Both the town and Miss Emily herself, now looked upon Miss Emily
as the only remnant of that greater time. This fact gives the reader an
understanding of the mindset of the “town,” who is narrating Miss Emily's
story to us in a form resembling a gossip circle, .....

To Kill A Mockingbird: Sterotypes And Misconceptions
<view this essay>.... obscured. “
You'll get killed if you touch that tree”(pg 38) This quote reveals that
the two siblings felt that Boo was a harmful person because of false rumors.
Stereotypes are easily picked up, and used to horrible extreme when a
large majority of people use them. This was the case with Scout and Jem
when they picked up on the stereotypes going around the neighborhood about
Boo. “When I got there, my breeches were all folded and sewn up”(pg 63)
When Boo sewed Jem's breeches together, this was a sign from Boo to let the
children realize what a kind and pleasant man he really was. Also, Boo was
considerate enough to save Jem from a couple of whippings, .....

The Dreams Of Alice
<view this essay>.... falling and falling, much like she is flying. "Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end? 'I wonder how many miles I've fallen by this time?' She said aloud," (Carroll 20). Alice falls and falls to a point where she cannot even tell how long she has been falling. In reality, falling for long periods of time, such as skydiving, is as close as one can come to true, unaided flight, just like Alice's fall down the rabbit hole
People who use hallucinogenic drugs have reported falling, as though they could fly, but few have ever actually felt that they were flying. Even those users who report they are flying report more of a blurred sense of fl .....

A Critique Of "Gone To Soldiers" By Marge Piercy
<view this essay>.... exciting by making each character really
experience love and hate and the mundane daily struggles of the individual.
I completely enjoyed Gone to Soldiers, because several main characters
prevented me from getting bored and kept me reading to find out what was going
to happen to each person next. I really enjoyed the profile of Louise Kahan a
female Jewish American writer, because she is independent and strong willed. An
example of her strength and belief in herself Louise did not instantly return to
her ex-husband Oscar even though they both still loved each other, because she
was strong enough to resist him and his womanizing ways. Piercy gave me a .....

Dantes Inferno
<view this essay>.... with examples that call upon his infinite store of knowledge, and thus draw a parallel that describes the experience in a further, although more subliminal, detail to the reader.
Through his mastery of language, Dante allows the reader to see what he sees, to hear what he hears, and to feel what he feels, and thus experience his sensitivity to the sights and sounds of nature. In Canto 6, Dante introduces the vicious monster, Cerberus and details his grotesque features to the reader. He states, “His eyes are red, his beard is greased with phlegm, / his belly is swollen, and his hands are claws / to rip the wretches and flay and mangle them” (66) .....

Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Grim Prediction Of The Future
<view this essay>.... or Huxley’s “Brave New World”, but all too quickly the reader will “discover, quite unpleasantly, that it is not a satire at all.” Nineteen Eighty-four is not simply a criticism of what Orwell saw happening in his national government with the coming of English Socialism, but a warning of the consequences of contemporary governmental practices, and what they where threatening to bring about.
Perhaps the book seems so bleak because the events in the book are a somewhat logical projection from current conditions and historical environment that Orwell observed in 1948. Perhaps people would be more comftorble with the book if they could rule out in their minds .....

One Of A Doll's House: Secession From Society
<view this essay>.... to pay for her husbands treatment.
By doing this, she not only broke the law but she stepped away from the
role society had placed on her of being totally dependent on her husband.
She proved herself not to be helpless like Torvald implied: "you poor
helpless little creature!"
Nora's second secession from society was shown by her decision to leave
Torvald and her children. Society demanded that she take a place under her
husband. This is shown in the way Torvald spoke down to her saying things
like: "worries that you couldn't possibly help me with," and "Nora, Nora,
just like a woman." She is almost considered to be property of his:
"Mayn't I look at m .....
