Billy Bud: Contrast Between Good And Evil
<view this essay>.... his death seem symbolic for good. Claggort "who's brow was of the
sort phrenologically associated with more than average intellect"
symbolically manipulated Billy Budd as did the "wisdom of the serpent"
manipulate Adam. Evil always tries to antagonize what is good. Therefore,
Claggort was Billy's antagonist throughout Billy Budd. Also symbolic to
the novel is the actual demise of both Claggort and Billy Budd. Claggort's
death is very short and appropriate "to his navel grade." In contrast,
Billy's death occurs during the dawn where " Billy ascended; and ascending
took the full rose of the dawn." Claggort's death completely contrasts
with the pure de .....

The Role Of Women In The Heart
<view this essay>.... back to the primitive, more demeaning viewpoint. Conrad employs characters that reflect the archaic perspectives concerning women. The main character, Marlow, generalizes all women and depicts every woman as living in a dream-like state merely “going through the motions” of life. In his descriptions of the various women characters, Marlow either implies or directly states that women are not mentally equipped to survive in society, and can only function in a dream-like state. He also conveys that it is the responsibility of men to save women and preserve their naïveté. This point of view is reflected often, and stems from his English upbringing and the British .....

The Squire's Tale: Franklin
<view this essay>.... not meant to be an interruption: one, the Franklin's admiration of
gentillesse would have made him reluctant to interrupt the Squire; two, the
passage ends two lines into the third section when the logical place for an
interruption would be at the end of the second section (Clark, 160-161);
three, the passage is similar to that of the Host to Chaucer after his Tale
of Melibee- which was an end comment, not an interruption ; and four, the
structure and tone of the passage does not seem to be that of an
interruption.
In praising the Squire, the Franklin mentions how he is impressed
with his "gentilly" (674) or "gentillesse" (694). If we are to believe
