The Hype: Television
<view this essay>.... families ahead of other priorities. We have strayed. In a society filled with "stuff," we have opted for a life that cherishes inanimate objects. We falsely believe that "stuff" will give us a feeling of happiness that was once openly available to generations before us.
How did we become such a consumer-happy society? One obvious reason is television. With the introduction of television, the public entered a fanatical world that made our own lives seem unreal. Americans began to yearn for lives of intrigue and notoriety. With a touch of a button, the television takes viewers "out of the 'real' world in which [they] reside and can place [them] at a bas .....

Down With Community Service
<view this essay>.... chief about it. He said that community service should be considered more
as a punishment to prisoners, rather than a privilege to citizens. He said that
people should not do work that they do not get paid for, unless they really
wanted to. This is one of the reasons that supports my disagreement to the
article.
Most young people do not have enough extra time to do community service.
I have been doing a survey about the subject matter for a few days, and I have
come up with some interesting results. It seems that eight out of ten students
that are about to graduate high school are planning to go to college after they
graduate. I also asked them about doi .....

The Chinese New Year
<view this essay>.... sprout pussy willows, mandarin trees and plum blossoms while food
stores work feverishly to produce loads of festive goodies. New Year as a
whole the is perhaps the grandest, noisiest festival in the Chinese
calendar. New Year Eve and New Year Day are celebrated as a family, a time
of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration is traditionally highlighted
with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of
the household and the ancestors, usually our great grand parents . It's
utmost significance to go through the customary Chinese New Years
traditions: house cleaning, decorations, lots of food, and more for their
celebration. .....

Nontraditional Tradtions
<view this essay>.... the circumstances, many of us honestly don't know how to
celebrate together. We may even see the word "tradition" as something
stultifying and old, having no meaning for or application to us personally;
something usually being forced upon us by someone who smells funny and is only
seen on holidays. What all of this means is that we can no longer simply follow
the examples of old. It is up to us to create new family traditions.
Celebrating is not hard. We all know about celebrating and have some ways of
doing it. The only challenge is to find new ways. Why do we need to celebrate
tradition? It gives us something to look forward to and makes a formal
stat .....

What Are Morals?
<view this essay>.... the goodness or badness of human action and
character; conforming to standards of what is right or just in behavior;
virtuous.” In short, morals are simply how one interprets the differences
between right and wrong. When you decide to help a struggling person in

you vote to keep abortion legal, that is morals. Whether thought of or
done subconsciously, morals are the basis on how you make many decisions.
From where does this sense of right or wrong originate from? Freud says
that moral development comes from obse .....

Goals And Accomplishing Your Dreams
<view this essay>.... achieve. For many teenagers this is the
leading cause of failure later in life. Many people loose their focus. A wise
man once said, “Dreams are what life is made up of.” This statement is true in
the sense that if you have dreams you have something to look forward to;
something to focus on; even something to live for. Knowing that you are a VIP
is important in the decision-making process.
To accomplish your dreams, you must first face adversity in the eye and
conquer your fears. For me personally, training to be a lawyer will take time
and commitment. I must constantly look at where I am now and evaluate where I
need to go from here. There will never b .....

Gangs: Until There's An Answer
<view this essay>.... Willie Williams called the gang "vicious," saying they have
"terrorized" the neighborhood for years1. On September 27, 1995, the Los
Angeles Times printed one response to the shooting written by two
emergency physicians, H. Range Hutson MD, and Deirdre Anglin MD, who were
deeply saddened by the shooting.
The strongest argument presented in the letter written by Hutson
and Anglin was that unless the root causes of gang formation are
effectively addressed, and gang access to illegally obtained firearms is
nullified, gang violence will continue. The claim was presented in such a
fashion that, while based on widely accepted ideas, an appeal to the

Sex In Advertising
<view this essay>.... the men and women we see in sexual advertisements do not actually depict the average person. Instead, advertisers create a stereotype that will appeal to the opposite gender's needs and desires. Attributes that appeal to male stereotypes include power, prestige, good health and longevity, sex, and new experiences. Attributes that appeal to female stereotypes include comfort, family affection, tenderness, fear, romance, generosity, and sensory pleasure. Advertisers, therefore, use actors or actresses who can trigger an emotional response from one of the above-mentioned attributes, encouraging the consumer to buy the product.
Since effectiveness is gender .....
