How Mountains Are Formed
<view this essay>.... and explodes out lava and ash. The
Hawaiian volcanoes, Mt. Hood, Mt. Etna, Vesuvius, and Mt. Saint Helens are
examples of volcanic mountains. Rocks are hard but in time they can bend or
fold producing Folded mountains. The Alps formed as the Eurasian plate
pushed against the African plate. Other examples of folded mountains are the
Rockies, Himalayas, Appalayas, and the Andes. Fault-block mountains are
formed when one plate pushes or pulls away from another plate. In the Earth,
hot currents of magma or molten rock may well up and crack the weakened
crust above. As the crust cracks, blocks of rock rise or fall forming
Fault-block mountains. Examp .....

The Age Of The Earth
<view this essay>.... used elements is Carbon 14. Carbon 14 is known to have a half life of 5,370 years. By measuring the amount of Carbon 14 in a rock, the age of the rock can be estimated. In the case of inorganic and older rocks, Carbon 14 would not be a good choice because of its short half life. Uranium, which is known to have a much longer half life would be a good alternative. If a pound of the metal Uranium is left to decay, it would take approximately 4.5 billion years for it to turn into half a pound of Lead ( Howter, 1996, Radiometric Dating: An Exercise in Faith). As it turns out, this is what scientists believe to be.
The assumption that the earth is 4.5 billi .....

Can We Say "NO" To Recycling
<view this essay>.... an alarming rate.(Durning 1992). However, unfortunately
recycling has proven that it is quite costly. Although recycling of wastes
material solves the problem of garbage disposal at landfills, and saves
resources, it does nevertheless entail large hidden costs in collecting, sorting
and manufacturing; therefore, it is necessary for the government to overcome
such problems of recycling to be worth while and for manufacturers and consumers
to consume less. Recycling has proven its efficiency in solving the problem of
garbage disposal at landfills1. By the accumulation of garbage throughout the
years, space available for garbage has largely diminished. In the sta .....

Acid Rain
<view this essay>.... acidic. It
is caused by today's industry. When products are manufactured many chemicals are
used to create it. However because of the difficulty and cost of properly
disposing of these products they are often emitted into the atmosphere with
little or no treatment.
The term was first considered to be important about 20 years ago when
scientists in Sweden and Norway first believed that acidic rain may be causing
great ecological damage to the planet. The problem was that by the time that the
scientist found the problem it was already very large. Detecting an acid lake is
often quite difficult. A lake does not become acid over night. It happens over a

Ionic Bond
<view this essay>.... solubility product constant, Ksp is given in the following example:
Ksp = [Ag][Cl]
Ksp for PbI2 is
Ksp = [Pb][I]2
This gives the relationship between the ions in the saturated solution and is the maximum concentration possible without creating precipitation. In this lab, solutions of lead nitrate and potassium iodide will be mixed at a number of dilutions. The reactions will then be observed to see at which point a precipitate no longer occurs. Ksp will then be stated as a range of values at room temperature, and the precipitate test tubes will be heated until the precipitate is dissolved so that Ksp may be observed and determined at different levels. .....

Muscles In The Human Body
<view this essay>.... over five hundred .
Muscle fibers are basically classified according to their size and speed of contraction. There are three main types of muscles. The first is skeletal. Skeletal muscle makes up the largest mass of muscle in the body, and is the type of muscle that is attached to bones and moves the skeleton in a conscious control, so therefore it is a voluntary muscle. Its contractions are short and strong, providing the force needed for movement. The muscle contractions produce and provide some heat needed in the body.
Skeletal muscle tissue is made up of smaller fibers called myofibrils. These myofibrils are composed of even smaller protein filaments. The .....

Mars Polar will touch down on Mars in December 1999, carrying two softball-size penetrators, the Deep Space 2 mission, that will crash land on Mars some 60 miles north of the landing site. All is going well with ’s Saturn-bound Cassini mission and the Deep Space 1 mission. Cassini will reach Saturn in June 2004 and Deep Space 1 will rendezvous with asteroid 1992KD in July 1999. The Galileo spacecraft at Jupiter went into a safe mode just six hours before its scheduled flyby of Europa on November 21-22 .....

Plant Evolution
<view this essay>.... the ability of being able to make food by using the energy from sunlight to converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar or starch. This process was called photosynthesis.
The next stage in the development in plants was 'The Age of Primitive Vascular Plants. This new period (the second stage) in plant history occurred within the next 50 million years (400-500 million years ago). Some of these developed root systems stems and leaves. They also formed woody tissue, which created stiffer stems, which eventually developed into tree trunks. They became tree-like and up to 40 meters tall, forming the world's first forest.
'The Age of Seed Bearing Plants' was the .....
