Catullus
<view this essay>.... history between and the woman he refers to as Lesbia is one of the world’s famous passions. (Wheeler, pg. 93) The woman who he writes about is really a woman by the name of Clodia. Through what we know of and the times that scholars can gather from the time period in his poetry, it is assumed who the real woman is. This conclusion came from his poem #79, Lesbius est pulcer. In that poem he accuses Lesbia of incestuous relations with her brother, Lesbius. The name Pulcer is a pun on the real name of Clodia’s brother, P. Clodius Pulcer. Pulcer was known not only for being a violent politician, but was also rumored to have had incestuous relations with .....

jealousy that he is with her love, and she is not. She feels envious of
the fact that he can speak and laugh with her love, and she can't. "-he who
listens intimately to the sweet murmur of your voice, the enticing laughter
that makes my own heart beat fast. If I meet you suddenly, I can't speak-
my tongue is broken." She wishes that she had the same relationship with
her love that he has.
The Greeks believed that love was so strong of an emotional
feeling that it could have physical effects. In the poem, the speaker

Phillis Wheatley: Black Or White Poet?
<view this essay>.... genius, but they are divided on the issue of whether or not she was race conscious and a protestor of slavery. Most believe she was not while very few believe she was. It is a matter of interpretation. Two prime examples that elicit contradictory views on this issue are “ On Being Brought from Africa to America” and “ To the Right Honorable William, Earl of Dartmouth.” In this paper, I will compare these views and express my own interpretation.
In the poem “On Being Brought from Africa to America,” Wheatley writes of being brought from her homeland to America. She lived as a domestic slave to a wealthy family in Boston where she was educated and made into a be .....

Thanatopsis: An Analysis
<view this essay>.... the second section Bryant writes that the reader's place will be
deprived of the sun, but nature will reach out to you. This is described
in lines eighteen through thirty. The best example of this is when Bryant
writes: ..."the oak shall send its roots abroad and pierce thy mold"(29-30).
In the third and final section of this poem, Bryant writes that you
will die along with kings and others. The reader should get the most out
of living he/she can possibly get because it is good, and do not be afraid
to die but go pleasantly. This is described in lines thirty-one through
eighty. The best example of this is when Bryants writes: ..."appr .....

Poet's Use Of Mockery As Diction In Poem
<view this essay>.... effect cause the reader to consider the
majors as gluttons gathered at the table. When the reader completes his mental
picture of the majors in the best hotel, the imagery of glory hogs is complete.
The poet's diction choice,
"Reading the Roll of Honor. `Poor young chap, ' I'd say - ` I used to
know his father well; Yes, we've lost heavily in this last scrap.' " of casual
language attempts to make the war seem carefree and nonchalant. The word "chap"
conveys an casual attitude towards the heroes as people. It seems to elevate
the status of the majors to a false superior position. "Scrap" makes it seems as
if the soldier's death occurred on a .....

Allowing Evil To Triumph
<view this essay>.... the evil, the
good are just inviting the evil to do as they wish.
Being one of the themes of the poem The Hangman, this quotation can
be related to the actions of the Hangman and the people he killed. Once
the Hangman began killing, nobody tried to step up and stop the Hangman
(except for one person who was killed). In this case, the good men did not
attempt to stop the evil. As a consequence for this lack of action, each
person was killed because he serves the Hangman best. The way in which the
good served the Hangman was by letting the evil triumph over the town. If
a group had attempted to stop the Hangman, he could have possibly been
stopped. .....

Romantic Sonnet
<view this essay>.... the "wild gloomy scene" that
suits the "mournful temper" of his or her soul (ll.4, 7,8). While much Romantic
writing dealt with love and the struggles endured due to love, there was also
emphasis placed on isolation, as seen in the emotions of Smith's speaker and
also in the setting on the work. Nature, in many Romantic sonnets, is in direct
parallel with the emotions being conveyed. Smith, for example, uses the water
to aid the reader's comprehension of the speaker's state of mind. Included in
this traditional natural setting is the use of the sea as stormy, deep,
extensive, and dark which ties the speaker in with the setting as the scene
applies to the t .....

Beowulf - A Noble
<view this essay>.... killing Grendel.
The king liked Beowolf's noble words and wished him luck.Beowolf
without hesitation laid down in the line of knights to wait for Grendel to
strike. This part of the story shows that Beowolf is not completly moral
because he lets some knights be killed by Grendel before he attacks.
Beowulf and Grendel fight and the monster's arm is ripped off causing a
slow and painful death.Even though Beowolf didn't do this heroic and noble
act for the reward ing Hrothgar gave him a sword and eight horses with
golden cheek plates.
The second act of Beowolf's conflict with grendel showing his
nobility is not with Gredel himself but with Grendels .....
