One poem I read that really stayed with me is the above poem, "This be the Verse." I will now show you how this poem, which at first glance seems to be written only to amuse, really has a much deeper meaning. I will examine the poem in several parts. First, I would like to examine the use of curse words in the poem, or why other words that would be considered more acceptable to the general public were not used. .... Americans mistrusted other Americans. These three different periods of U.S. history display how Americans can treat fellow Americans so cruelly. African Americans were terribly treated after slavery. Although they were Americans just like the whites, many of the whites hated them because they were different. One example of mistreatment of the African Americans was segregation, which was the division of local places by race. The blacks were thought to be so "dirty", and the whites were scared of them. .... we receive the hint about the age of the narrator when old Cotter talks about how he would not want his child to have to have too much to say to the priest. He said his idea is to "let a 'young lad' run about and play with young lads… (P.2)" The word 'young lad' here refers to the narrator. From this we know that the narrator must me a young boy, but still we don't know a specific age. In "An Encounter", we found that the narrator is attending a school. When the teacher was yelling at the narrator and his friends after finding that they have been reading something inappropriate, he refers to the students as "boys like you." "Who will believe me…/That I have had the plague a year?/ Who would not laugh at me, if I should say,/ I saw a flask of powder burn a day?" (l. 5-8) These things are impossible just as being in love for an hour are impossible. In the second stanza of the poem, Donne begins to why it is impossible for love to last for short period of time. He says love envelopes one's whole being.
