By the end of this wonderful book we see the Joad family branching out in many different ways to embrace all of mankind as one big family. Ma Joad’s main concern at the beginning of the story is her family. She wants to keep the unit together and works diligently to achieve this goal. However, one by one, family members leave the group for various reasons leading to the slow but sure disintegration of the Joad clan. The first to go is Noah; then Grandpa and Grandma die;Connie .....

The village, by all appearances, seems to be a normal and ordinary place with its inhabitants meeting in a square with festival like intentions. However, the villagers know fully that when the drawing is over, one person in the community will die. Nonetheless, it is tradition. The atmosphere is casual yet anxious. Tessie Hutchinson arrives late because she “clean forgot” what day it is. It seems impossible to the reader that anyone would forget a day like lottery day. We continued our journey in silence for about five minuets until a sudden event turned our lives around. As we pulled up to a stop sign, he looked both ways before turning left on to the main street. Without a worry in his head he pressed on the gas pedal and began a left turn. Unfortunately the darkness of the evening prevented him from seeing a huge limousine which was slowly approaching our car. In a matter of seconds, the limousine was in our car. James had to work instead of getting a free meal because his mother would not let him accept charity. After the death of Santiago, his house was a complete mess. Santiago's corpse was lying in the living room in an iron cot, surrounded by fans to cool the body (act as a refrigerator), furniture was moved out to make room for everything. Clotilde Armenta's store is where a lot of the story took place. The Vicario twins were here since four o' clock in the morning waiting for Santiago Nasar.
