Shakespeare And Kingship
<view this essay>.... all of Shakespeare's plays were written purely for entertainment value, not as a historical record of what occurred.
The main notion of kingship that Shakespeare attacks in Macbeth, King Richard II and King Henry IV, is the divine right of kings, where the kings claimed that they were God's counterpart on Earth, and a 'step up' in divinity from the other aristocrats and the common people. In his plays, Shakespeare depicts the kings, and Hal, in King Henry IV, as people who were not, or at least did not act like the direct descendants of God. In Macbeth, he commits treason and murder, the two worst crimes of the day, and neither Duncan nor Macbeth were sav .....

When her husband came home with the dinner invitation is when I changed my perception of Mathilde. I wasn't too pleased with her in the beginning of the story but now was when I started to hate her. She had it pretty good. She had a husband that loved her and was willing to do anything to please her. Even if it meant giving up something he had b .....

C And C Huck Finn, Ethan Frome
<view this essay>.... of Huckleberry Finn, Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome, and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Each of these novels' main characters showed a deep emotional bond with another character. Huck Finn's relationship with Jim was somewhat strange, but nevertheless was strong. Jim was a runaway slave and Huck thought that it was a sin to help a runaway slave. Despite his religious beliefs, Huck knew that he was "the best friend old Jim ever had, and the only one he's got now." He knew that by helping Jim he "will go to hell," but took this risk and followed his own morality. Love was also shared between two characters in Ethan Frome. The love shared in this .....

Shooting An Elephant
<view this essay>.... have normally done.
Orwell discusses the time he had in the town when a wild elephant got loose and was terrorizing the town’s bizarre. He was sent to the location of the elephant and was forced to make a decision that would determine possibly how he was looked upon by all people from that day forth. Orwell was not the kind to just simply kill something for the mere fact of joy and amusement. He did not want to kill the animal for being wild and dangerous towards the people. He seemed to try to convince himself that all animals go through this stage, however he could not face the fact that the people would think of him as a coward. Orwell made it o .....

Inherit The Wind Drummonds Def
<view this essay>.... ideas of creation and evolution lead to different aspects of the debate, and the right to freedom of speech.
In the town of Hillsboro, the debate between creation and evolution is blown out of proportion. First, the townspeople react almost violently to Cates' teaching of the evolution theory. For example, when Cates is arrested, he is called names and is threatened to be killed by the townspeople. Also, Reverend Brown's prayer meeting influences people to wish horrible things to Cates as Brown portrays him as the devil and asks that his soul "writhe in anguish and damnation" (66). While all the townspeople, including her father have negative attitudes .....

Emily Dickenson
<view this essay>.... are some of the shorter poems, such as the four lined stanzas of "Faith is a Fine Invention" and "Success Is Counted Sweetest". In "Faith", Dickinson presents a "witty and biting satirical look at Faith and its limitations" (Hartman 113). While it still amuses readers today, it must be mentioned that this short poem would have had a greater impact and seriousness to an audience from the period Dickinson lived in. Dickinson was raised in a strict Calvinist household and received most of her education in her youth at a boarding school. In this short, witty piece Dickinson addresses two of the main obsessions of her generation: The pu .....

Importance Of Being Earnest
<view this essay>.... class, and sadly to say yes. In today's world it seems that class is still a huge part of the world order, and moreover it seems that there will always be the rich and poor, the owner and the worker. This is even demonstrated by the literature of our time and that of other era's, such as the play "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde. In this play Wilde display's the class structure with a different and interesting twist. He makes a reflection on the society with his own sense of humor, but however it still leaves a very good opportunity to make a Marxist critique about the way the class structure influences the play. He leaves room for these critiq .....

In the first one hundred pages if Ishamel I found a number of convincing ideas that I believe I will take away with me. The greatest of these being that the technology that we believe will prolong our existence is the same driving force that propells us to extinction. I believe that Quinn illustrated this idea superbly with his narrative of the aeronauts. Man
