The Crucible
<view this essay>.... One girl
doesn't fit the mold of just trying to save herself, and that girl is
Abigail. Abigail doesn't want to be blamed for the deaths of innocent
people, but she also has her own twisted agenda of vengeance and greed
that forces her to continue accusing people. For one thing she lusts
after John Proctor, and she thinks that if Elisabeth is dead he will love
her. Also she was somewhat of a henchman to Mrs. Putnam, and Dr. Parris,
for she is eliminating Parris's enemies, and she accuses Rebecca Nurse for
Mrs. Putnam. Of course Parris doesn't know her murder of innocent people
is for him, but she does it out of a somewhat obsessive sense of faith to

Hard Times: The Gradgrind System Of Education
<view this essay>.... of education is the reason why Tom and Louisa Gradgrind are lacking
in imagination and therefore are not ready to tackle every day human life.
The Gradgrind education system was very common in Victorian times and was
probably devised by the many rich powerful people ready to employ the
pupils once graduated. As this type of education teaches its pupil's to be
a passive unthinking work force, therefore the employers could manipulate
their minds, doing whatever they were told. The system forces the pupils
to intake pure hard facts, nothing else, therefore not exercising the
imagination at all. Leading the pupils to be lost in the surrounding world
when a di .....

Grapes Of Wrath 4
<view this essay>.... His style in The Grapes of Wrath is to have a chapter with dialogue and the story, and to then give a picture of the times. He describes the depression of the 1930’s and gives the reader a full view of what the migrants were going through. There is a dialogue and ‘story’ chapter, which is followed or preceded by an ‘intercalary’ (between) chapter. The ‘intercalary’ chapters are what serve to show the migrant’s struggling, and the big picture of what times were like.
Genre: The Grapes of Wrath is considered a protest novel to many. Steinbeck originally wrote it to ask California farmers to have sympathy for t .....

sugar hogshead again, and was free and satisfied."
When Pap returns for Huck, and the matter of custody is brought
before the court, the reader is forced to see the corruption of society.
The judge rules that Huck belongs to Pap, and forces him to obey an
obviously evil and unfit man. One who drinks profusely and beats his son.
Later, when Huck makes it look as though he has been killed, we see how
civilization is more concerned over finding Huck's dead body than rescuing
his live one from Pap. This is a society that is more concerned about a
dead body than it is in the welfare of .....

Gimpel The Fool: Golde Vs. Elka
<view this essay>.... 7). Tevye was the man in their household. When he told Golde to put up the samovar for tea, or set a place at the table for a guest, she did it without question.
Not to say, that Golde was a pushover. She was able to put Tevye in his place when necessary, and she was not scared to do it. When he would carry on, quoting the bible, she would get fed up and say, “Spare us your bible!” (Aleichem 42) This would quiet him immediately. Where Golde would silence Tevye because his speeches were tiresome to her, Elka would simply make fun of Gimpel, keeping him quiet because he did not know how or want to retaliate. “Look who’s here! He’s come, the drip. Grab .....

Review For A Canticle For Leib
<view this essay>.... what Leibowitz' soul was really like, and how strong Francis' faith remains. Faith is set apart from knowledge cleanly and clearly in this section.
The next section takes place 500 years later, when a scholar, Thon Taddeo, is trying to piece together the real story of what happened to civilization after the nuclear holocaust. In sharp contrast to Francis' faith, Thon is filled with doubt which becomes his major way of approaching life and finding truths. History is revealed to be inconsistent and subject to interpretation and loss. History is not nearly as reliable as Francis' frail desert faith.
The last section of the novel shows the first Earth colonists ar .....

Faulkner's "The Unvanquished"
<view this essay>.... pragmatism. For example, all of the Sartoris women were idealists;
almost everyone in Yoknapatawpha was an idealist. The fact that John
Sartoris was able to get away with murder and be elected into public office
soon after is a strong example of this.
There were not many pragmatists in the novel. By definition, a
pragmatist is one who believes that the meaning of conceptions is to be
sought in their practical bearings, that the function of thought is to
guide action, and that truth is preminently to be tested by the practical
consequences of belief. Bayard Sartoris was a pragmatist. He 'let his
conscience be his guide'. Telling his father about Drusil .....
