The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn: Cynical Point Of View
<view this essay>.... to a discussion of this sarcastic view. In the beginning of the novel, it would seem that both Huck Finn and Jim are trapped in some way and wishing to escape. For Huck, it is the violence and tyranny of his drunken father. Kept in a veritable prison, Huck wishes desperately to escape. Jim feels the need to escape after hearing that his owner, Miss Watson, wishes to sell him down the river-a change in owners that could only be for the worse. As they escape separately and rejoin by chance at an island along the river, they find themselves drawn to get as far as possible from their home. Their journey down the river sets the stage for most of Mark Twain's comme .....

The Island By Gary Paulsen
<view this essay>.... learns
that all things are connected.
An interesting minor character is Emil Aucht. On the morning of his
first day in Pinewood Wil wakes up to find Emil staring at him through the
window. Emil is an old man with one tooth, no hair and ears that stick out.
He chews tobacco and spits brown gunk all over the place. He first appears
in the story to request that Wil help him get his car out of the mud. Then
Emil reappears to fix the plumbing, wrecking Wil's parents' nerves in the
process.
The atmosphere in the story is that of a small hick town in northern
Wisconsin:open, friendly, relaxed and very laid-back. It strikes me as being
very much like "cottage co .....

The Great Gatsby: Morals And American Idealism
<view this essay>.... Egg.
This story is about a wealthy man Gatsby, who becomes corrupt, so
to say, he doesn't respect the money which was virtually given to him when
he was younger so now the great wealth is out to destroy him in a way.
Gatsby takes things for granted because he didn't have to word to
get the Upper Class status which he now has. An example of this is also
one of the main parts of the story. Daisy, Nick's cousin and the wife of
Tom Buchanon, once knew Gatsby when they were in high school together and
they had a thing going. After a while they separated and Gatsby went into
the Armed Forces. Now, at the time when this story takes place in the
spring of the .....

Uncle Tom's Cabin: Influence Of The Setting
<view this essay>.... The black race was
treated harshly just because of their color. They were beaten, over-worked,
and disrespected. Most of them were illiterate as well which did not help
one bit. In turn they could not make intelligent decisions, better yet
pursue what they wanted. Even if they had that ability though, that option
was not available because they were "black".
The details of the setting that influenced the actions of the
characters were, again, the time period and where it took place. However
this was not the only thing that persuaded the characters because they
influenced each other. The citizens followed the crowd and did not have
their own opini .....

King Lear 3
<view this essay>.... tragedy that occurs to a parent, king or not.
King Lear's punishment could be seen as a simple problem that was blown totally out of proportion in many ways. This tragedy went totally against Socrates' beliefs, which were, "If we conduct our lives reasonably and morally, we shall live a good life." This story shows that is really does not matter how good or evil you are throughout your life, there will always be things that occur that are never under your control whether they are negative or positive. King Lear's decision was never foreshadowed to have a negative affect on his family or his kingdom. Who would ever think that Lear would end up stand .....

The Great Gatsby: The Green Light
<view this essay>.... of the green light, one must
learn what a symbol is. A symbol cannot be seen as a sign. The two are
very different. A sign is an object which signifies something else. For
example, a green traffic light instructs drivers to proceed. A symbol is
much more complex than this. A symbol may also stand for something else as
seen in its simplest case. A symbol sums up a large number of ideas and
attitudes. The complexity of a symbol may be more intense than a sign
because it can have several meanings in different situations. (Beckson and
Ganz 207)
The green light is first mentioned in chapter one of the Great
Gatsby. Nick, the narrator of the novel, sees .....

The Reaper's Image

is no friction tape on the mirror, Spangler becomes sick and leaves for the
bathroom. The story ends with Carlin waiting for Spangler to return.
I thought that this story was very good, because it started off really
slow and worked it's way into a really interesting plot. I liked the end
because it never really finished, it left the ending up to the reader. This
seems to be a common theme in a lot of Stephen King's stories. He likes to
leave the reader in suspense, and keep them wondering.
