Holden’s Revelations
<view this essay>.... pervert. After reviewing Mr. Antolini, Holden finally concludes that, maybe, he was not making a "flitty" pass at him; he just likes patting people’s heads as they sleep. This is the only time during the novel when Holden thinks twice about considering someone as a pervert. This is also the only time in the novel when Holden considers a positive side. This event, however, does not constitute a significant change, as even Holden himself says, "It's not too bad when the sun's out, but the sun only comes out when it feels like coming out.” The sun, of course, is a reference to decency through the common association of light and goodness. Thus, Holden’s percep .....

family's, by defending a Negro. He is compelled to undergo such a risk as he
believes he is protecting an innocent man. Despite the fact that he is black.
Jake could not live with himself if he failed to give his utmost effort in
clearing the accused, Carl Lee Hailey's, name. The lawyer feels that it is his
obligation to humanity to do so. Similarly, the case Atticus accepts is
something which goes to the essence of a man's own conscience. Atticus is
unable to treat the underdogs of the town how the majority of people act towards
them. Clearly the people of Maycomb are narrow-minded, bigoted and hypocritical,

Lord Of The Flies
<view this essay>.... played a important role in this story . A power struggle between two boys to gain control over someone ore something.
In the beginning of this book the conch was regarded as having power and authority: "I'll[Ralph] give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking." (Golding 33)
The struggle of power in this book was very strong separation of the groups. The conch seemed to be the only common bond between the two groups. Even though Jacks' group was separate, when Ralph blew the conch in chapter 10 the boys on Jacks side came out and looked to see what was going on, they still believed in the power of the conch: "He [Ralph] .....

To Kill A Mockingbird: Courage
<view this essay>.... Atticus. Atticus was one of the people who showed the
largest amount of courage. He showed courage when he shot the dog. He
showed courage in not fighting when it seemed to be the only thing to do.
But, first and foremost, he showed courage in taking the Robinson case.
Because “even though you're beaten 100 years before you started is no
reason not to do something”. This is one of the things that Atticus lives
by.
Scout also has courage, but in a different way. She has shown
courage in many situations, such as when she has stood up for her brother,
and also when she hasn't. Overall, Scout has just as much courage as any of
the adults, but it is the courage o .....

Lord Of Flies: Animal Instincts
<view this essay>.... Finally, when people are left to their own devices for a long period of time, their natural animal instincts come into effect and these are deemed evil by society.
People will choose irrationalism and evil because they involve no work on the person's part and are enjoyable. At the beginning of the story all of the children, including Jack were in favor of having rules and following them. One of the rules was that the children would come to gather for an assembly upon hearing the sound of the conch. It is stated that in the beginning of the book, " By the time Ralph finished blowing the conch the platform was crowded." (p.32). This shows that in the be .....

Grapes Of Wrath: An Undaunted Journey
<view this essay>.... in intercalary chapters.
Steinbeck uses intercalary chapters to provide background for the
various themes in the novel. This effectively forshadows upcoming events by
telling of the general state of the local population in the intercalary
chapters and then narrowing it down to how it effects the main characters
of the novel, the Joads. Setting the tone of the novel in the readers mind
is another function of Steinbeck's intercalary chapters.
In chapter three, Steinbeck emaculatly describes the long tedious
journey of a land turtle across a desolate highway. From the onset of his
journey, the turtle encounters many set backs. All along .....
