In the Novel the Joads family is exposed the wrath of the Dust bowl and forced to move southwest toward California in search of the “promised land” (French 5). The Dust bowl was a harsh time in the 1930’s, the United States was feeling the effects of the Great Depression, and farmers already had enough troubles dealing with the effects of industrial farming (French 200). Does Sethe kill her baby girl because she wants to save the baby from slavery or does Sethe end her daughter's life because of a selfish refusal to reenter a life of slavery? By examining the complexities of Sethe's character it can be said that she is a woman who chooses to love her children but not herself.
