Euclid: The Elements
<view this essay>.... of Naucrates and that he was born in Tyre. It is believed by Historians of mathematics that this is entirely fictitious and was merely invented by the authors.
The second type of information is that Euclid was born at Megara. This is due to an error on the part of the authors who first gave this information. In fact there was a Euclid of Megara, who was a philosopher who lived about 100 years before the mathematician Euclid of Alexandria. It is not quite the coincidence that it might seem that there were two learned men called Euclid. In fact Euclid was a very common name around this period and this is one further difficulty that makes it hard to find inform .....

Piggy. Although his strength and age over- powers the others, Piggy's
intelligence is by far greater than Ralph's.
Jack is similar to Ralph in his strength, but seems to have a totally
different point about survival on the island. His points focus on the fact
that they are going to stay there for a while, and need to hunt.
Simon is different than the others. He seems to have some common sense,
but does not speak up. He is also one of the bigger kids, but does not have
enough self confidence in himself to become a leader.
Overall Piggy would make an excellent leader, but his appearance and age
would make the othe .....

Pycho By Alfred Hitcock
<view this essay>.... Tom Cassidy. His character is an affluent middle aged gentleman. He portrays society’s perception of America’s upper class, snobbishly rich. Cassidy flaunts his money in Marion’s face. He talks of his eighteen-year-old daughter who is getting married the next day. As her wedding gift he is buying her a house with forty thousand dollars cash. He claims that she has never had an unhappy day in her life. Though this is unrealistic, he proudly boasts about how his money is to thank for this. Another thought from Mr. Cassidy is that money does not buy happiness, but it buys off unhappiness. The Scarlet Letter: The False Qualities Of Life
<view this essay>.... only camouflaging his dark, hidden secret, which was the sole cause of
his sufferings. Hawthorne successfully portrayed the personal agonies one
would suffer by cowardly holding secrets within oneself.
In the Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne set out to show the consequences
of leading a double life. Arthur Dimmesdale, to the people of Boston, was
a holy icon. According to the public, "never had a man spoken in so wise,
so high, and so holy a spirit, as he… nor had inspiration ever breathed
through mortal lips more evidently than it did through his" (167).
Dimmesdale had risen through the ranks of the church and had the utmost

The Stone Angel By Margaret Laurence
<view this essay>.... Secondly, Hagar tries to escape from her
own poor qualities to which she is captive; attempting to fill the
emptiness within her. Finally and futilely, she tries to escape death. All
of these attempts fail dismally. Throughout the narration of the novel many
images are put forth repetitiously to aid the development of Hagar's
character and the main themes. The Stone Angel is a very effective story
due largely to the biblical, water, and flower imagery.
The biblical imagery is very strong and can be found numerous times
throughout the novel. The name of the main character, Hagar, is also the
name of a hand maid in a biblical story. Many paralle .....

The Subtle Humor Of Pride And Prejudice
<view this essay>.... view themselves in a way which makes it easy for
the reader to laugh at themselves. She introduces caricatures and character
foils to further show how ridiculous a character may be. Pride and Prejudice
has many character foils to exaggerate a characters faults or traits. Austen
also uses irony quite often to inform the readers on her own personal opinions.
The comic techniques caricatures, irony, and satire, not only helped to provide
humor for Austen's readers, but they also helped Austen to give her own personal
opinion on public matters.
When an action is exaggerated on stage by an actor, it becomes all the
more noticeable to the audience. An aut .....
