So, as the story goes, Huck plays a trick on Jim and Jim thinks that Huck is dead. When Jim finally realizes that Huck is not dead, he gets really angry at Huck. Throughout the story, the hermit complains about the "awful monster" and regards her as the "personification of evil." This is not the root of the problem however. The people of Salem were colonist from England seeking religious freedom. Salem was a Puritan town and had a strong theocracy. The moral standards of the people were very high.
