The Millennium Bug

industry expert, Peter de Jager, described the problem quite well. "We
programmed computers to store the date in the following format: dd/mm/yy.
This only allows 2 digits for the year. January 1, 2000 would be stored as
01/01/00. But the computer will interpret this as January 1, 1900- not
2000" (de Jager 1). The '19' is "hard-coded" into computer hardware and
software. Since there are only 2 physical spaces for the year in this date
format, after '99', the only logical choice is to reset the number to '00'.
The year 2000 problem is unlike any other problem in modern history for
several reasons. William Adams points out some of the most important ones.

Lasers
<view this essay>.... it is a particle as
well as a wave. In beams of light whether they are ordinary natural or
artificial the photon waves will not be traveling together because they are not
being emitted at exactly the same moment but instead at random short bursts.
Even if the light is of a single frequency that statement would also be true. A
laser is useful because it produces light that is not only of essentially a
single frequency but also coherent, with the light waves all moving along in
unison.
Lasers consist of several components. A few of the many things that the
so-called active medium might consist of are, atoms of a gas, molecules in a
liquid, and ions in a crys .....

Authorship
"How to perform open heart surgery: A Primer by Billy 'cool kid' Johnson." If a member of ones family had a heart attack, would the above source help in saving their life if a hospital was inaccessible? This would depend on the authenticity and authorship of the source. In any case, using material from an unquestionable source is not a reliable idea. Why? Because the authorship of the source, probably the most important criterion one must use in evaluating the effectiveness of a website, is sometimes debatable. The author of a website .....

Unemployement - The Unavoidable Consequence Of New Technolog
<view this essay>.... between technology and employment, all that can be said with any certainty is that technological advancement has the capacity to create revolutionary economic and social changes (Jones 1996, p.21). In order to provide a clear analysis of the impact of technology on employment, we need to take into account the consequences of technological transitions and seek to relate these to social, economic, political, and cultural factors occurring at the time.
The relationship between technology and employment is at the same time complex and volatile (Mokyr 1990, p.52). To illustrate, the term “Luddite” was coined in the early 19th Century to describe mindless machine-b .....

The History Of The Internet
<view this essay>.... has proven again and again how robust it is. It has with stood many an attack from construction, people digging up cables, to lightning blowing up a router. The network has always recovered and bypassed the problem.
The Internet began as the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) during the cold war in 1969. It was developed by the US Department of Defense's (DOD) research people in conjunction with a number of military contractors and universities to explore the possibility of a communication network that could survive a nuclear attack. It continued simply because the DOD, DOD's contractors, and the universities found that it provided a v .....

As A Technology, It Is Called Multimedia
<view this essay>.... gurus see a dawning digital age in which the humble television will mutate into a two-way medium for a vast amount of information and entertainment. We can expect to see: movies-on-demand, video games, databases, educational programming, home shopping, telephone services, telebanking, teleconferencing, even the complex simulations of virtual reality. This souped-up television will itself be a powerful computer. This, many believe, will be the world's biggest media group, letting consumers tune into anything, anywhere, anytime. The most extraordinary thing about the multimedia boom, is that so many moguls are spending such vast sums to develop digital technolo .....

COMPUTER CRIME Hackers And Security Measures
<view this essay>.... of society and business in an information age in which many people are not computer literate. These conflicts lie on the issue of whether information should be made publicly available or not (centralise or decentralise government) and on issues of law enforcement. Hackers have raised serious issues about values and practices in an information society.
Introduction
It is true that computers and telecommunication networks have become a growing aspect of our society and of course of our lives. This type of technology is used to support unlawful as well as legal activities. Personal computers and especially the Internet consist of a collection of tools, which a .....

The Telephone System
<view this essay>.... call. In
the transmitter there are two common kinds of transmitters: the carbon
transmitter, and the electret transmitter. The carbon transmitter uses carbon
granules between metal plates called, electrodes, with one consisting of a thin
diaphragm that moves by pressure from sound waves and transmits them to the
carbon granules. These electrodes conduct electricity flowing through the
carbon. The sound waves hit the diaphragm causing the electrical resistance of
the carbon to vary. The electret transmitter is composed of a thin disk of
metal-coated plastic held above a thicker, hollow metal disk. This plastic disk
is electrically charged, and creates an .....
