Compromise Is The Key
<view this essay>.... development. Although, it is not recognizable, two people conceived the embryo in question. Therefore, the fetus should have the same right to life that all existing creatures possess. No one person should be allowed to destroy something already in the process of living. The decision of destroying any living being should be left in the hands of the being, and in this case that is impossible. We have to wait until the child is old enough to ask her. Many couples, who can not have children of their own, want to adopt new born babies. If the embryo is allowed to live nothing but good will happen for it, because of the demand for newborn babies in the adoption ma .....

McCarthyism
<view this essay>.... this before he needed a cause to fight for re-election”. (Latham, pg. 11) His portrayal of Communism as the supreme evil allowed his accusations of “disloyalty” to be incredibly effective. “He was a master of the sound bite, and played the press like a harp”. (http://www.dimensional.com/%7Erandl/mccart.htm)McCarthy did not create the communist problem, but he exploited it shamelessly for political ends, accusing the Democrats in general with baseless, sweeping, shotgun allegations.
Senator Joseph McCarthy came into conflict with the State Department, President Eisenhower, and the Army in the 1950’s. This conflict was not for any high moral standards but it wa .....

The Search For A Better Tax System
<view this essay>.... goods such as liquor, tobacco, and imports (Tyson 8). Starting in 1913 however, congress set up a tax system with a graduated rate starting at just one percent and going up to seven percent (Tyson 8). The sixteenth amendment to the constitution which enacted this system, was first proposed by Teddy Roosevelt and was later pushed through by his successor William H. Taft, both of whom were Republicans (Tyson 8). (This must have been before the term "anti-tax-and-spend" was commonly associated with Republicans.) Today, personal income taxes account for about 85 percent of federal government revenue (Tyson 8).
In contrast, the states generate only about thirty .....

When Does Life Begin
<view this essay>.... an answer in a religious belief, such as suggesting that human life begins when the soul is created. Others object that such answers cannot be used as a basis for law, because that would be a violation of separation of church and state. . There is a far bigger problem with such a definition of life. In the essay, “?,” Jay Johansen says, “…the soul definition, this one may be philosophically interesting but is of little practical use, as it is not at all clear how we could determine when someone first becomes conscious”. The author means that no one knows when the soul is created, and it is difficult to see how we could find out. If someday, someone invented .....

Media Violence
<view this essay>.... what is real and what is injurious. What you see is what you get has taken on an all too terrifying reality. It's not just an escapist ideal, denial, or unavailable evidence that define why people equate violence on TV with the violence in their lives and in other Americans lives. It's a founded and plausible justification. Over 1,000 detailed studies confirm this link. Advanced scientific research illustrates the horrific results we hate to hear: television is bad for kids. Our electronic babysitter has reached the end of her employment - she shoots out too many intensely violent acts in a surprisingly perfunctory way. Leonard Eron, PhD at the University of I .....

Uniforms In School, Good Or Ba
<view this essay>.... proposal described in the "Washington Post" states that most schools have turned to a school uniform to relieve the pressure on students to try to keep up with the fashions and be hip (B1). Which is true to some extent. Some students may face certain pressures to stay hip but it really doesn't effect a huge majority. For larger schools it might effect a greater percentage. School Uniforms have placed a question upon the students' parents and school districts. According to an article published in the Bellingham Herald states that a school or school district may require a school uniform when it has an overwhelming need to put into place (A9). This is agreeable, .....

Feminism And Gender Equality I
<view this essay>.... as an oppressive force in their life. I find many parallels
between women's experiences in the nineties with Betty Friedan's, in her
essay: The Way We Were - 1949. She dealt with a society that expected
women to fulfill certain roles. Those roles completely disregarded the
needs of educated and motivated business women and scientific women.
Actually, the subtle message that society gave was that the educated woman
was actually selfish and evil.
I remember in particular the searing effect on me, who once intended to
be a psychologist, of a story in McCall's in December 1949 called "A
Weekend with Daddy." A little girl who lives a lonely life with her mot .....
