Rare refuges were places like the land of Palestine, eternal home for the Jews, welcomed or not and America, the land of democracy that welcomed all. What is amazing about the play is that it does not only reach out to all Jews in history that have been exposed to persecution and being forced to leave their homes and lives but to any ethnic group who has ever faced the cruelty of others. With the introduction of the machinery, factory owners no longer needed “skilled” craft workers for production of factory goods. The machines performed faster, better and with more reliability. In addition, they were more “docile” and “compliant”. Therefore, many women workers were hired during the progressivism era. These three questions are as follows: (1) What is the artist trying to do?, (2) How well does the artist do it?, and (3) Is it worth doing? The preceding questions could be answered in aim of the painter, actor, director, scene designer, make-up artist, and so on. In analyzing “Curse of the Starving Classes” with Goethe’s questions, I will keep my focus on the playwright, Sam Shepard. His is a story that I don’t come across very often. In the 1880’s, the Robber Barons had a dramatic impact on America. Some of them, such as Andrew Carnegie showed that people could rise from rags to riches. The 1920’s were called the Roaring 20’s, partly because people were carefree and willing to have fun. Jazz became the dominant form of music. Finally along comes the 1950’s. One soldier writes to his mother and tells her that for a second, he felt as if he was on vacation because it was so beautiful in Vietnam. One had to think that this man wrote this to his mother only for her to worry less. He did not want to tell her the whole truth on what was really going on inside of him. These qualities are what have confirmed China as not only a grand civilization but also one of great integrity. The area in which China is contained is within the continent of Asia surrounded by the countries of Mongolia, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, and both North and South Korea. With these various surrounding civilizations China has been susceptible to multiple altercations with encroaching empires and inflictions from outside cultures.
