All humans have free will and moral choice--no human can behave as a machine. This point is lost to those who are denied the final chapter of A Clockwork Orange. Chapter 20 ends with Alex saying "I was cured all right." These are the last words of the book in the American version. There is no indication that Alex will change from the evil life it appears he will soon resume. It is implied to the reader that Alex is destined for a life of evil and there is nothing he can do to change it. Alex has no free will .....

Petruchio doesn’t seem to have either but hides it well. Baptista is so baffled by the fact that a man wants to marry his eldest daughter that he doesn’t really make sure Petruchio is wealthy as he does for Lucentio (who is really Tranio in disguise). Kate is angry at first because she has to wed Petruchio, a rude, overbearing man that will do anything to make her wrong. Eventually she realizes he is playing a mind game with her. The relaxed tone of “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time” and serious tone of “To His Coy Mistress” point out the difference in the way the writers feel about their characters.
