This was shown through the relationships of Laertes and Polonius, Polonius and Ophelia, and through Ophelia and Hamlet. Although the relationship between Laertes and Polonius showed deceit, there was evidence of love. Polonius' character was shown as a devious, spying character throughout the play. His spying inhibition was what ultimately got him killed, when he was hiding behind an arras and Hamlet stabbed him. One of Polonius' first deceitful actions, was against his own son, Laertes. Another hero characteristic of Odysseus was the power to resist temptation. This was perfectly displayed in the episode of The Lotus-Eaters. When the rest of his men “longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homelands”, (Page #602) Odysseus held strong. .... is an innocent man who after struggles to survive in the mad and evil world learns that irrational ideas taught to him about being optimistic (everything is for the best) are not always true. The main theme, which is presented throughout the novel, is optimism. Out of every unfortunate situation in the story, Pangloss, his philosopher-teacher has advised Candide, that everything in this world happens for the best, because "Private misfortunes contribute to the general good, so that the more private misfortunes there are, the more we find that all is well". Pangloss tries to defend his theories by determining the positive from the negative situations and by .....

In his nineteenth year on his own initiative and at his own expense, Augustus raised an army with which he set free the state. He drove the men who slaughtered his father into exile with a legal order, punishing their crime, and afterwards, when they waged war on the state, Augustus conquered them in two battles. As a man who thought as himself as a courageous man, Augustus was filled with pride while accomplishing all that he did. He remained true to his units and they thought too thought of their leader as a great leader and hero. .....

Reinforcing its literal presence in the novel, an echo of India appears in Mrs. Dalloway's narrative rhythms. Like the intricate percussion of the Indian tabla, the fabric of Woolf's narrative comprises a polyrhythmic texture that subtly undermines London's booming metronome: Big Ben. The beautiful and complex narrative of Mrs. Dalloway seems to defy readers' powers of description.
