Sadly, "springing grass", a flowing river, and budding flowers are things that unoppressed people might take for granted (For a slave or someone struggling to get on their feet post slavery, could not take the time to enjoy life's pleasures in which Dunbar symbolically uses nature.) Dunbar uses language that reaches out, striking a personal chord with the reader. Grass, river, or flowers may be objects we enjoy, but underprivileged people, not necessarily minorities, cannot enjoy because of social or economic circumstances. Underprivileged people may see white people doing what they enjoy and work themselves .....

.... theme of this book was how much science not only opens are minds but also how much science influences our lives. I liked the example that Sagan uses close to the beginning of this story of how he was at a gathering and asked everyone in the room how many of them had not been helped someway in their lives by science. I thought the fact that only one person raised their hand was a good way of showing just how influential science is in everyone’s lives. I think that there could also be another theme for this book. .... that in the Great War. paul disassociates himself from his parents, old school firends, and even religions because they remind him of his pre-enlistmentdays, when he was one of the innocents who iddn't realize what the Great War was. His only friends seem to be his military comrades for they are the only ones who uynderstan what he is going through or has gone through by the end of service. Paul resents the effort that everybody seemed to be going through in order for him to enlist. Teachers and parents especially wanted him to enlist. The first time Willy is seen lapsing off into the past is when he encounters Biff after arriving home. The conversation between Willy and Linda reflects Willy's disappointment in Biff and what he has become, which is, for the most part, a bum. After failing to deal adequately with his feelings, he escapes into a time when things were better for his family. It is not uncommon for one to think of better times at low points in their life in order to cheer themselves up so that they are able to deal with the problems they encounter, .....

The book is written by Cinua Achebe, a twentieth century author. Born in Nigeria, Achebe grew up in a transitional culture much like the one described in the book. He is currently a professor of literature at the University of Nigeria. Many factors can be attributed to the cause of Okonkwo’s demise, But the three most drastic ones are: hisson’s conversion to Christianity, the change in daily life the new religion brings, and his frustration caused by his apathetic clansm .....
