Of course, there would be no story without the characters but even more so than that Jim and Della set the atmosphere. For example, when Jim walks in on Della to find that she has no hair after he has bought her combs, he is not infuriated, just astonished. There could not be a better emotion to feel in that position. The same happens when Della sees Jim no longer has the watch making her gift just as useless. If the characters had become angry, their love would not be displayed as strong. Yet, they are very much in love and play a part in expressing the theme. A .....

Lena Younger, more widely known as mama, achieves her dream of buying a house and immediately puts thirty-five thousand dollars down on a new house and sixty-five thousand into Walter’s care. All hope is lost when Walter loses the money and the family ends up back to where they started, with nothing. Though the money is lost, this lifetime dream of Mama and Ruth’s is not destroyed. The American Communist scare in the 1950's was initiated by the increased popularity of the socialist system of government. Because this system challenged the basic civil rights of Americans, this event involved the entire nation. In order for hysteria to occur a significant number of people must learn of the event. This happens by the promotion and spread of fear throughout a community. Promotion is important because without public knowledge of the fear social unrest will not take place. .... the conflict it plays battleground to. With the Earth itself, the source of all things, supporting his themes, Remarque has a seemingly unbiased witness bearing testament to his observations. Remarque can use nature as the judge to condemn war, along with shocking imagery, so that his literature remains without a trace of nationalism, political ill will, or even personal feelings. It should be noted that the nature motif is carried consistently throughout the novel, and that it supports many of the author's lesser themes. For the purpose of portraying war as something terrible, though, the nature motif is expressed most dramatically in the following passage .....
