In the beginning, when the boys first met and assembled at the platform, the conch was the symbol of power. The person holding the conch always had the attention of everyone. There was a leader, Ralph, who was elected by the children.
"Yes!"
"Vote for chief!"
"Let's vote------"
This represented democracy, a government elected for by the whole population and they lived in a classless and tolerant society. There were rules which were to be obeyed by all. Nobody was exempt from them, they were agreed on by all. A fire was lit, to .....

That is when they realize that their father is a humble man who doesn’t like to show off his talent.
Another misperception that Scout has is about Mrs. Dubose. She always thought of her as a mean old lady who had nothing better to do than to yell at children. But, they soon found out that she was in withdrawal for a very serious addiction which was why she was so angr .....

The first allusions of human battles and people is to the Trojan War. Thoreau makes many references to this great struggle which has popped up many a philosophical debates. “The legions of these Myrmidons covered all the hills and vales in my wood yard, and the ground was already strewn with the dead and dying, both red and black.” This is the first reference to the Trojans and their war. The Myrmidons were the people of ancient Thessaly who followed their king, Achilles, to the Trojan War. “Or perchance he was some Achilles, who had nourished his wrath apart, .....

Faulkner's strong condemnation of the values of the South emanates
from the actual story of the Sutpen family whose history must be seen as
connected to the history of the South (Bloom 74). Quentin tells this story
in response to a Northerner's question: "What is the South like?" As the
novel progresses, Quentin is explaining the story of the Sutpen myth and
revealing it to the reader. Faulkner says that the duty of an author, as
an artist, is to depict the human heart in conflict with itself. This
attitude is revealed in the conflicts that Henry Sutpen undergoes in
Absalom, Absalom.
Thomas Sutpen is the son of a poor .....

A Farewell To Arms
<view this essay>.... suffering provides the context in which courage can take place. Comradery, surprisingly, doesn't seem to be as obvious in the novel as the other themes; it is mainly shown by the nurses' commitment to one another and the 'male bonding' at the mess. There also seems to be more of an individual comradery within friendships and with individuals rather than a whole group. In fact, there doesn't seem to be a sense of people working together for a common cause.
These four themes contribute to the many decisions that Frederick Henry has to make. That is in regards to the war and his relationship with Catherine, he has an inner conflict with himself with external .....
