The Great Gatsby: America's Era Of Disdain
<view this essay>.... vulgarism live lives of sacrifice and disdain to obtain the dream. These two are very compelling yet there were those who were not content in either, and these were emphasized in Jay Gatsby.
Jay Gatsby had been one of many who attempted for fame and glory, and due to his persistent dissatisfaction the results culminated in success. Unlike others Gatsby felt condemned not to be a fradulent dog. “The Truth was that Jay Gatsby, of west Egg, Long Island, sprang from his platonic conception of himself.”(pages 104, 15-16)
Distorting his name, inventing a seventeen-year-old self-conception, he masked his counterfeit wealth from bootlegging with an image he wore w .....

Heroic Qualities In The Hobbit
<view this essay>.... side when you really need it. Because sometimes it's
going to come down to pure chance and luck of the draw. One who is
consistently unlucky will not have great success at being hero. One
example of Bilbo's luck is in chapter 2 when him and the dwarves are about
to be roasted Gandalf shows up to save them all. Now given that that is
not Bilbo in a heroic situation but it is a sign that he does get lucky.
Another example of Bilbos' luck in a heroic situation is in chapter 9.
Bilbo is very lucky when he is able to first escape the elves. He is again
lucky when he is able to explore the elven palace at such great length.
Yet another example of his luck is .....

To Kill A Mockingbird: The Theme Of Prejudice

Prejudice is defined in Comprehensive Desk Dictionary by Thorndike
Barnhart as an "opinion formed without taking the time and care to judge
fairly". The main focus of part one is Boo Radley. Boo was considered to
be an outcast by many of the people in Maycomb. He never came outside,
except for two occasions in the book. The first time Boo comes out is when
a fire breaks out at Miss Maudies, and Scout is standing outside in the
cold. Boo wraps a blanket around her, without her knowing that he did.
The other time didn't happen until part two, when Jem and Scout are

Contrasting Marlow And Kurtz And The Theme Of Evil In "Heart Of Darkness"
<view this essay>.... and all of its elements. Just as everyone has the
potential for evil within themselves, we too have the potential for true
goodness. In many literary works the author attempts to exemplify the evil
which lies within by showing many characters which have been, or are being
overcome by their inner darkness. In the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph
Conrad we see how Marlow's journey into his ultimate evil, into his inner self,
can be a positive experience. By contrasting Marlow with Kurtz, who represents
the absolute evil, we can see the two products of an inner evil which has
emerged. Marlow, who defeats his evil, and gains self-knowledge, and Kurtz, who
is .....

the gentleman's face, and in his bold rolling eye," overshadows his wealth

Angel's intentions and morality overshadowed his actions. Angel Clare's

Subject: Giovanni & Lusanna-by Gene Brucker
<view this essay>.... young man named Giovanni. As time wore on they allegedly fell
in love and enjoyed all of the pleasures of their love. It was later
claimed by Lusanna that Giovanni had promised to marry her in the event of
her husband¦s death. Her husband soon died a questionable death that left
open the possibility of poison. Unlike today¦s world divorce was unheard
of, and unacceptable. Giovanni then refused to marry her in a public
wedding because his social status would be greatly hurt to marry some one
in the working class of Florence. This is another example of why today¦s
society is so much different from how it was when they lived. Another
strange thing about t .....
