Biography Precis -- Black Boy
<view this essay>.... with his strict grandmother, a fervently
religious woman. In spite of his frequent punishment and beatings, Wright
remembers the pleasures of rural life.
Richard then describes his family's move to Memphis in 1914. Though not
always successful, Richard's rebellious nature pervades the novel. This is best
illustrated by his rebellion against his father. He resents his father's the
need for quiet during the day, when his father, a night porter, sleeps. When Mr.
Wright tells Richard to kill a meowing kitten if that's the only way he can keep
it quiet, Richard has found a way to rebel without being punished. He takes his
father literally and hangs the .....

The House On Mango Street
<view this essay>.... writer.
For example, The House on Mango Street appears to wander casually from
subject to subject—from hair to hips, from clouds to feet, from an invalid
aunt to a girl named Sally, who has "eyes like Egypt" and whose father
sometimes beats her. But this apparent randomness disguises an artful
exploration of themes of individual identity and communal loyalty,
estrangement and loss, escape and return, the lure of romance and the dead
end of sexual inequality and oppression.
The House on Mango Street is also a book about a culture—that of Chicanos,
or Mexican-Americans—that has long been veiled by demeaning stereotypes and
afflicted by internal ambivalen .....

Catcher In The Rye: Escape From The Truth
<view this essay>.... to whom Holden tells that he really wants to be ‘the catcher in the rye”. Holden admits his only truth and shows that Phoebe is his only friend. Another form of escape for Holden is his acting, which he uses to excuse the past. Holden has tried to lie, hide, and blame his way through life; when he finds that it is not the answer he collapses.
Holden is a pathological liar. He lies, some times for no reason. Holden says his name is Rudolf Schmidt, who is acutely the janitor, to Mrs. Morrow on the train. He continues to lie throughout the conversation and avoids getting together by saying he has a tumor in his brain. This is the type of lies Holden t .....

Critical Review Of 1984 By Geo
<view this essay>.... and anything it wished to do. It is also possible that he wanted t tell of how mind control and torture techniques could be used to make an individual or an entire nation do what the government wanted.
In his novel Orwell used the image of a man who stood in a shadow that covered his face. This was to make him anamous and unrecognizable. The figure was called "Big Brother" and this figure was placed on posters and put all over the place with the saying, "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU." This was used to let the people know that no matter where they go the could not escape the watching eyes of the controling government.
The government itself was very mysterious a .....

Midsummer Nights Dream
<view this essay>.... but he takes satisfaction being put in his place by others. In the end, still under the spell of fairy magic and therefore not seeing with true eyes, he seems a bit imbecilic laughing at the acted "lovers" in the play. He doesn't realize it, but he is in a play of his own. Likewise, as with the other characters, what happens to him is far more interesting than the sort of character he is. I.Demetrius' unwelcome deceit and shrewdness and what is discovered A. Since Demetrius only has two lines throughout the entire first act, it shows that he can't stand up for himself, likewise, this lack of speech displays his lack of self-confidence and image: Relent, sweet .....

Tarrou: The Plague's Only Hero
<view this essay>.... For these reasons, only Tarrou can be considered a hero.
All the characters except Rieux and Tarrou can't be considered
heroes. Paneloux believes in sainthood and God, but he offers no
resistance to the plague since he believes it was divinely sent. Rambert
chooses to run from the problem rather than face it. McCarthy also points
out that he neglects his basic duty as a reporter by failing to record
anything (109); a duty which Rieux and Tarrou fulfill. Grand produces two
sentences and does nothing to fight the plague, which McCarthy interprets
as a parody of Rieux's inability to explain the plague (109-10). Cottard
wholeheartedly embraces the plagu .....

A Farewell To Arms: Overview
<view this essay>.... Frederick's actions are
determined by his position until he deserts the army. Floating down the river
with barely a hold on a piece of wood his life, he abandons everything except
Catherine and lets the river take him to a new life that becomes increasing
difficult to understand.
The escape to Switzerland seemed too perfect for a book that set a tone of
ugliness in the world that was only dotted with pure love like Henry's and Cat's
and I knew the story couldn't end with bliss in the slopes of Montreux. In a
world where the abstracts of glory, honor, and sacrifice meant little to
Frederick, his physical association with Catherine was the only thing he had .....
