Heart Of Darkness: The Journey Into The Soul
<view this essay>.... to find
one's soul. The setting, "took in the forest, the creek, the mud, the
river-seemed to beckon with a dishonoring flourish before the sunlit face
of land a treacherous appeal to the lurking death, to the hidden evil, to
the profound darkness of its heart." Conrad 54 Conrad does not even mention
their exact location which is very peculiar. The main river was described
in the form a snake. A snake can be looked at from many points of views,
mythological, biblical, literal and metaphorically. The snake represents
all the twists and turns and being able to find one's inner-self is very
difficult and twisted. The snake represents some of the animal .....

The X-Files, X Marks The Spot: Book Report
<view this essay>.... There was suspense as soon as I got into
the second chapter. I didn't want to put the book down. I sometimes have
trouble trying to find a book that's actually interesting, but I didn't
have any trouble with this book. I got through the whole book fast, I was
always reading it in study hall, and trying to get as far as I could in
readers workshop.
It was easy to understand. I've read a lot of science fiction books that
are very complicated. Some books have too many characters to remember, or
they have something that is really weird or unrealistic. Some science
fiction books get way too far out. This book was nothing like that.
The events were spre .....

Comparative Essay Between Heart Of Darkness And Apocalypse Now
<view this essay>.... and evil in humans. In The Heart of Darkness, Marlow speaks of Fresleven who was killed in a fight with some natives. The argument between Fresleven and the natives was over some chickens, and Fresleven felt he had been ripped off in the deal. Marlow describes Fresleven as "…the gentlest, quietest creature that ever walked on two legs."(p. 13 Conrad) However, later in the same paragraph Marlow says,"…he probably felt the need at last of asserting his self-respect in some way. Therefore he whacked the old nigger mercilessly."(p. 13 Conrad) Soldiers in combat are forced to bring the evil within themselves out every time they go into battle. The scene in Apocaly .....

Oliver Twist And Hedda Gabler: Commentary On The Social Conditions Of That Time
<view this essay>.... making themselves appear quite natural, even beneficial, but
they are otherwise.
In Oliver Twist and Hedda Gabler, the characters portrayed present
destructive forces. These characters represent self-interest . The
characters are always looking out to advance themselves in matters either
financial or otherwise. They posses qualities that people hide from the
general public. These qualities, the want to control, greed, envy, idleness
and jealousy, to name a few, are hidden from those they interact with, but
there are some that they associate with that they reveal their mind to. But
those that know are of a like mind to them. "Birds of .....

Analysis Of Chris Marker's "La Jetee", And Roland Barthes's "Camera Lucida"
<view this essay>.... his Mother's
childhood, and subsequently his own. Even where they differ, it seems to
me that the fact that Marker and Barthes are even considering the same
ideas upon which they can differ is an amazing similarity. Perhaps every
single major idea Barthes addresses in his novel I can find addressed in La
Jetee. Because of this fact, and because of the power of both works, I was
led at the end of my research to some new, yet fundamental ideas about the
nature of photography itself.
One of the most interesting aspects of this study, and also the
most challenging, is the nature of Marker's “film” itself. Simply the fact
that I have to put the word film in qu .....

Great Gatsby Color Symbolism
<view this essay>.... the novel. The reason for this may be that green is the color used to describe the main character of the novel, Jay Gatsby. One of the possible meanings of green in this story is envy. Gatsby can be seen as an envious man for a few reasons. For one, he is extremely envious of Tom Buchanan because of the fact that he has the one thing he can’t buy, Daisy. Also, Gatsby is extremely envious of the people that he invites to his house. He knows that he is not old money like the people he invites to his parties. This makes him a man of who, is “Green with envy.”
In like manner, green is also used to symbolize money. In the story, money controls the .....

The Study Of Imagery In Adrian
<view this essay>.... Irony is a significant literary device, which is used many times to achieve a good sense of humor. A perfect example for a use of irony is seen in the description of the psychologist of the main character, Lenora.
“After all, she was just a psychologist. God ! She wasn’t ! Apart from Pandora [his infatuated love] she was probably the loveliest woman I have ever spoken to. I found it hard to take my eyes off her black suede shoes with high heels. “
(p. 35)”
Before the entrance of Adrian to the psychologist’s room, he obviously does not expect much of a physical appearance. However, after he enters the room, ironically, Leno .....

The Genji Monogatari
<view this essay>.... of emotional response to the beauties of nature or the more gentle of
human relations that was likely to elicit such an expression of spontaneous
feeling as ‘Ah!'"(Varley, 1973, p.48) The "gentle human relations are
those events that give the basis for the escapades of Genji, but it is the
more subtle use of nature that gives us the backdrop for the story (and,
incidentally, the basis for a paper).
The first way that Murasaki employs nature is in her precise
characterizations of the dozens of main and minor players in Genji. From
the season in which the character appears to the clothes that they wear to
the portion of Genji's palace that they inhabit, wi .....
